The 'long version' of Number 1 Song in Heaven off the green vinyl 7" - Sparks
Unamerican Broadcasting 12" or extended mix of same tune on Uh! Tears Baby (A Trash Icon) - Win

If you play Sparks 12 inch remixes, please get them on coloured vinyl! blue(?)
NB I have only JUST understood what "tryouts for the human race" *means* - ho ho, "trials"! so the Americanisation of Harry Potter has had a good effect!
I always think the best 12 inch mixes continue well beyond the 7 inch, rather than beginning with one instrument for a few minutes and adding the others, like the Soup Dragons and "I'm Free".
You yourself have played one of my favourite 12" - "I Could Be Happy" by Altered Images.
Is the ultimate Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" - "Where Did Our Love Go"?

All '80s, of course
Homosapien - Pete Shelley
Just Be Good To Me (12 vocal re-mix) - SOS Band
Duel - Propaganda
Let Them All Talk - Elvis Costello

Yes, the Propaganda extended remix must surely be "Jewelled" from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Rally coverage -
as I recall I was looking for this for years and discovered it two years ago with help from 6music listeners!

As tolhurst suggests, a really good 12" single is one that is structured to suit the format; that builds and builds accordingly.
The test of a great 12" single is -
When you hear the 7" edit, you feel cheated. It just sounds "odd"; "not quite right".
Not just because it's shorter; but because the beats and emphases and "punchlines" are in all the wrong places.
In that spirit, I'll offer a few favourites of mine.
"Big Decision" - That Petrol Emotion
As a N. Irelander, my fav N.Ire single.
The 12" version quotes from an early hip-hop club classic - "How We Gonna Make The Black Nation Rise?", Brother D & The Collective Effort.
"You gotta agitate, educate and organise!"
(Incidentally, the soundmeister on this great single is Roli Mosimann; who, around the same time, produced the brilliant "Infected" album for The The.
He had a very distinctive "sound"; I can't put it into words but I could spot it when I heard it.
Whatever happened to him?
He was good!)
In a similar spirit -
"Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat and "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys (great Hit Singles though they were in edited form) only Truly Work when heard in their full 12" glory.
Obviously the same applies to Primal Scream.
The edited version of "Loaded" just sounds silly on the wireless.
But...
"Screamadelica" (the track itself; one side of the vinyl "Dixie-Narco" 12" EP) is Primal Scream at their best.
Written, performed, produced and paced to exploit and enjoy the full 12" format.)
In a similar spirit (though earlier) I'l put in a word for the long-forgotten, overlooked but truly wonderful -
"Work For Love" - Ministry
Before Al Jourgensen went all industrial, his first version of Ministry was hardcore-dancefloor.
This 12" single is an absolute gem; I part-time DJ'd at a wee club at the time and this became our "signature" tune.

The extended dub remix of Napalm Death's "You Suffer", please; I'm sure you've played it before.......all 6 seconds of it.......

The Lotus Eaters "It Hurts"
Spandau Ballet "Communication"
Siouxsie "Peekaboo"
That Soup Dragons one with the double groove.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - surely the quintessential 12" remix band, each release coming out in a rage of formats. The 'Annihilation' remix of 'Two Tribes' probably has the edge over the 'Carnage' mix, although the latter juxtaposes the 'other three' clowning around - "My name's Peds!" "My name's Mark!" "My name's Nash!" - with Patrick Allen, the voice of 'Protect and Survive', intoning "Mine is the last voice you will ever hear - don't be alarmed."
Them was heavy times.
