Hi all
There's a new post on the blog written by Ambridge Extra director, Jenny Stephens where she explains how they spy on the characters' most revealing thoughts...

Thanks Tayler - I like it, whether it'll work for a whole series' length I don't know, but we'll see.

Not happy at all with the internal monologue. It's a betrayal of the medium, the genre and the point.
This is not a Dicken's novel and I think it's a bad idea which has the potential to dissapear up its own.
The sound quality of the contrast between dialogue and monologue is clunky too.

Sorry about the apostrophe. I'm rubbish at that sort of stuff.

I would have thought most peoples' thoughts are far more complex than can be expressed in 'speech bubbles' and that the skill of writing dialogue is that you can subtly hint at characters' unexpressed feelings; I found the last episode moved painfully slowly. We might be better off reading Proust, who is far better at delineating the complexities of human behaviour. Sadly, I have never got beyond page 100 of Swann's Way, and I wonder how long I will be able to persist with Daniel's awakening interest in girls; his thoughts seem rather chaste for a 15yr old

They probably edit out his thoughts of bondage, oral, anal. spanking etc. as inappropriate for a family show?

i've always assumed that thoughts can either be astract (non verbal) or concrete, which illustrates the difficulties in portraying them. Was not implying any kinkiness by Daniel; chacun a son gout, as Proust might say, if not think.

"thought voice" works well for me and the different style helps me seperate TAX from TA esp with the joint players.
The teenager chat make me cringe a bit but to be honest I was sat in a cafe yesterday with a group of "yoofs" behind me and their conversation was making me cringe as well.

How did it compare to teentalk on Amex? Or Waterloo Road, if you follow it?

Today Dan kept saying "cool"
Is it still "cool" to say "cool"?

Dan isn't cool, though, is he? My experience of teenagers suggests that it is still current in the non cool or geeky/nerdy population. Not sure about the girlfriend, she sounds like one of these types who are oblivious to the havoc they cause.

Seems my original reply broke the rules in some way so I鈥檒l try again leaving out the bits that鈥檚 I assume broke the rules
Well the conversation was littered with swearwords to the point that after 2 minutes you didn鈥檛 hear them anymore(much like living next to a train track). The subject matter changed so rapidly it was difficult to keep track. They where having 3 or 4 different conversations but all mixed in together and returning to subjects at random while texting non stop.
Topics included
Dale farm
Football
Local dating gossip
New Xbox game Forza 4.
They didn鈥檛 appear to listen to each other properly and often the same point was made several times by different people. When one of the boys left he said 鈥淔acebook me bro鈥 causing me to choke on my coffee!!!
I was in the shopping centre in Livingston which resembles an Olympic village as most people are walking round in track suits. Accents central Scottish but lots of 鈥測oofspeak鈥 words.
Totally different from TAX but understandable. You couldn鈥檛 have the swearing and as a narrative tool the constant subject change would not work either.

Are we going to start to hear 'inner voices' in TA? There are a number of 'inner voices' I'd prefer not to hear, specially Will Grundy's.

Course it is,it's like cool.
Teenspeak is a whole other world.

But the thought voice-overs are slowing down the action adn dissipating the dramatic tension so much.
A good script would indicate such thoughts without clunking us over the head. I mean, you really can't guess that Dan fancies Erin or what he must be thinking as 'Ralph / Rafe' heaves up...come off it.
Talk about writing it in very slow capitals for a witless audience.
