difficult to believe hippy Kate puts up with this stuff
Slapped around to get her to do so?
Clearly that's the suggestion.
And I dont buy it. Kate is too pig-headed and stroppy to be bullied, and Lucas was never the bully. And with that sort of atmosphere in the house, Pheebs would have run home to Ambridge very quickly and JD would have picked up something from phone calls/letters long before now.

Stand by for Kate running home on the pretext of 'taking Pheebs home' - and an international custody battle ensuing for the two kids she left behind.
PS. Perhaps we should send Mabel out there - she'd sort Lucas out.

Having decided to listen to it -I don't buy it either for the above reasons.
Phoebe has clearly picked up something about the relationship between Kate and Lucas. She appreciated the problem with them being late.
Would Phoebe really run home when she had made such a fuss about going?
She might not run home but she would be pleased to get out of that atmosphere-it must be dreadful to live with- apart from the fact that it is highly unlikely that Kate would take it.

Agreed. Maybe it will turn out to have been uncharacteristic and due to the stress of the moment.
Though her two [entirely harmless word for black children] might tie her to a Lucas gone bad? Â
But in episode 2 Lucas seems perfectly reasonable again.

I don't like it. He's not the same as he used to be. Granted people change, but does this jar?
husband = bastard = ok for wife to have affair (TA rule)
and hippy? lol

I can only recall him previously being heard in Ambridge when Kate brought him home to meet Mum and Dad. It wouldn't be surprising if he put on a pleasant face just for the time he was over here. On the other hand he was on the phone when Kate and Pheebs came so perhaps he was a little short because they wouldn't shut up so he could get on with his call or yaers of living with Kate has worn him down.
Lucas has to be a bastard so that Kate isn't a bitch for screwing around

If you don't mind me saying so, Jon, that's absolute balderdash. Kate will do whatever suits Kate at the time and if that means screwing around and cockolding a perfectly lovely husband that's what she'd do. I'm not sayiing Lucas is perfect, simply that his behaviour toward Kate has absolutely no bearing on whether she has an affair. All that matters to Kat eis whether she wants to or not.
> his behaviour toward Kate has absolutely no bearing on whether she has an affair<
Agreed, the Lucas being a barsteward is purely so we don't hate her for it
Jenny has been nothing more than a willing doormat doing Brian's bidding since they married and yet no-one seems to even resent even a little his affair with Shovehorn and the spawning of the leprechaun.

I don't really remember him from before, but my impression was of an old-fashioned slightly chauvinistic man concerned about his future and chasing the chance of a better job.
The sort who would be a bit paternalistic and see his role as provider and therefore his job as the most important.
Actually Brian has many of the same characteristics.

JD might not, I do.
Plenty of people also do, but plenty of women think Brian is the bees knees

You are JD. ??
I am sure Jennifer did resent it at the time but she has the sense to move on.
>You are JD<
oh gawd, I am JD too!
Jenny Dahling has the sense to realise which side her bread is buttered on
Well, today we heard Lucas' mother reminding him about how hard Kate works and not to take her for granted.
then he gets some clay on his suit, and again Mum has some words of wisdom - just let it dry and it'll brush off, she says.
What does little Lord Lucas reply? I'll get Patience to do it.
Later, we find out that Patience is the person coming to babysit.
What is up with this guy? has he lost control of his hands all of a sudden or is he just bone idle and expects women to run around after him?

Mietaka I don't think black men in general or SA men in general are very equality minded.
And Lucas is both.
Though of course the lines came into the mind of an English writer!
.
I thought it was quite funny hearing Kate being ordered around.
