Why do we need all of this twaddle? I still dont grasp the point of TA Lite. Either its important for the storyline in TA itself (in which case, write it in) or its a stand alone drama with no connection to TA at all (in which case why bother?).

Kate is a spoilt little brat. Phoebe is her gullible daughter who she manipulates for her own ends. We know this. It doesnt need a separate series to 'explore' it and then insert them both back into TA as though nothing else had happened.

And as for the teenage 'acting' - dont get me started.

It's extra, just a bit more than we would have otherwise.

Of course we don't 'need' AmEx but then we don't 'need TA or the afternoon play or book at bedtime. It's entertainment and you can choose to partake or not, as the mood takes you.

Exactly, ermitrude. Horses for courses. Nobody is /obliged/ to listen to AmEx (or TA, for that matter). Live and let live, and don't throw stones.

Ever since Kate was so keen to spend a year in Ambridge, I have suspected all was not well in paradise and all this year that Pheboe has been in SA, I have longed to be a fly on the Madikane Mansions wall. It has not featured at all and all we were likely to get was some sort of rumpus over Pheobe's return. Now, through Ambex, we will get that extra detail.Pheobe's return will be covered from the UK perspective on TA proper, and from the SA angle on Ambex. Later in the series, we have been told we will get Kenton's visit to NZ. Foreign jaunts don't usually feature in detail in TA and there is no reason to assume this one would be different.

In short, we are getting, as the name suggests, something extra: more detail and a different perspective. Whether you argue this COULD be provided through TA itself, it has not been pre-Ambex. Personally I enjoy it. If you don't, fine. Just listen to TA and get what you've always had. Those who wish to, gain. Those who don't wish to, don't lose out.

NOW, try to concentrate very hard.

The purpose of AmEx is to get R4 listeners to visit and become aware of R4X.

Why oh why do people not follow this evident fact?

I really enjoyed the last two series of Ambridge Extra, but so far this one is quite boring. I don't really care about Kate and Phoebe as characters. I'm more than happy for them to stay silent while in South Africa.

I do see that they're trying out new things and it seems as though this series won't be set in Ambridge at all, but I think we need more than just 2 fairly regular Archers characters to make it work.

I don't think I'd mind if all the South Africa stuff was interspersed with Ambridge goings on, but as it's all in SA, it's boring. Sorry.

It's another bit of light entertainment. It's filling a niche for people who enjoy listening to TA and would like to hear more.

We've had lots of conspiracy theories about the ulterior motives behind AmEx, but I'm quite happy to take it at face value and listen to it on my IPod when I'm out and about.

And from what we've heard in AmEx so far, Kate isn't at all spoilt in SA. She's got a pig of a husband, who thinks he can dictate to her and is trying to do some good in the local community and look after her children at the same time. I hope it is all building up to Kate leaving Lucas and coming back and wreaking havoc in Ambridge, which is what she does best, after all!

I have really enjoyed Amex so far at least as much as TA. Each to their own. I will have to listen more closely to Lucas as I did not pick up on that vibe but I do agree that Kate flouncing back to Ambridge and reeking havoc would be entertaining.
It's all about entertainment isn't it.

Tuesdays & Thursdays on R4E at 2.15pm, with the minibus at 11.15am on Sunday; repeats are scattered through the R4E schedule at various times.

Thank you so much Mustafa Grumble that explains a lot such as why I couldn't find it today and why the omnibus was so short.

    In reply to 4...

I've just listened to the first 2 episodes and they're qute gripping but they really don't seem like a bit 'extra' or 'seperate' - they are a radically new story line - Kate bullied and abused by her husband, having an affair with a colleague, and Phoebe at risk of local muggers and rapists. And Ambridge normal still has Kate as fine and getting her own way in everything and Phoebe just wants to go camping with friends. I think its wrong to run two such different scenarios side by side.

    Hi-lo

In TA proper Roy did comment that Kate seemed a bit odd/detached.

It is surely realistic that events in SA as perceived in Ambridge may differ from what is happening on the ground in SA?

Actually there seems to be more reason to fear violence in Ambridge than in Melville (boho bit of Jo'burg where they live).

No need to apologise Paul237. I've always loathed selfish, egotistical Kate and haven't got the slightest interest in her or her (totally improbable) life in South Africa. No attempt was made to give listeners some idea of who the characters were in relation to Phoebe/Kate and the similarity of accents made things even more confusing. Given the way TA is going, this new storyline is just about par for the course. I shan't be listening again.

No. Surely that's not right, OI2012.

I thought it was a product placement deal with AMerican EXpress.

    So, has the strategy worked?

Personally, I download AmEx and /never/ listen to R4X.

Me too. I also download TA - because it's more convenient. In the same vein, I sky-plus just about everything so I can watch it at a time that suits me and fast forward through the ads.

I've stopped listening to R4X completely, because the programs are now repeated far too frequently.

I only used to listen to the vintage ´óÏó´«Ã½ comedy on 4X anyway and now that all of that and more is available from Internet Radio stations, why bother?
