It's interesting that on Thursday's episode, Kate, when speaking to Phoebe referred to her (Kate's) parents as Granny and Grandad.

Later on in the same episode, Phoebe was with Mike, who she also addressed as Grandad, and referred to Betty as Nana. I would've thought most children who have two sets of grandparents generally refer to one set as Granny (Grandma) and Grandpa for example, and the other set as Nana and Grandad (although obviously these are interchangeable). I wouldn't expect a child to call both grandfathers Grandad, especially when they both live in the same village, because apart from anything else, it's really confusing!

Many people have the same names for both sets and distinguish them by given name when needed.

I agree, I am Grandma Oxford and my grandson's Scottish Grandmother is Grandma Glasgow. The grandfather's have different tiles - Grampy and Papa Joe. The wee man (as they call him) doesn't seem too confused. Another couple of grandchildren has a Polish grandma - Babchka (pardon the spelling!). As the cousins grow up I think it would be more confusing if they all called me something different. I totally refused to be Nanny (a goat IMHO) or granny which seems to me old and toothless (apologies to all the Nannies and Grannies out there!)

Hmm! Looks like I'm in a minority here. It just seems to me that by having different names for them, it saves having to specify, eg Grandad Aldridge or Grandad Tucker. I and my other siblings all refer to my parents as Nana and Grandpa when speaking to our offspring. The children and their cousins all call their other grandparents Granny (or Grandma) and Grandad. This just seems to avoid confusion.

However, when it comes to lack of continuity, I do remember in the past Phil Archer being referred to both as Grandad and Grandpa by the same branch of the family.

    So I should think!

I love being Granny and as we don't see the family very often because of distance, it's really wonderful to hear my 4 yr old granddaughter calling, "Granny! Granny! Come here!" or asking, "Granny, read that again, please," when we've had fun with a book.

I am definitely Granny and couldn't be anything else.

Other grandmother is Nana. We are both what we wanted to be called.

My children had "Granny from Granny and Grandad" (my parents) and "Granny from Granny and Grandpa" (husband's parents).

We all knew what and who was meant!

Both my grannies were Granny no confusion. Aunt is a step grandmother and she is Granny Fay to hers where as their biological one is Granny.

Cousin's ma in law who was already grannie to her other grandchildren tried to insist that my aunt was grandma.... I will never forget her muntinous expression and we all said "nonsense, we weren't confused, he won't be and Grannie C and Granny M it was, But I do know other families where it is Nanny and Grandad and Granny and Grandpa .. but one side had already established the names with the cousins and it happened that what the maternal side used in their family were the vacant titles...

I think most people can work it out to suit themselves and as long as all happy no problem ... one friend had Nice Grannie and Dragon Grannie.. but I think they were terms of reference rather than address

but people do tend to be consistent what ever they call a certain person they stick to it.

In Wales, even amongst the non-Welsh speaking majority, it is common for one set to be "Nain & Taid" and the other Grandma/pa.

I think that is actually the point I was trying to make - there should be consistency there. The scriptwriters should make a note of what name is given to the various grandparents and make sure they stick to it!

Yes,,,,, Vicky is consistently grandma vicky. Peggy seems to be Gran to her grandchildren - but grandma to Ruairi... is that a deliberate distinction or an error. Jill is often gran but sometimes grandma. There probably aren't enough terms for Phoebe to differentiate since the kid has not only biological grandparents but the parents of step parents and grandfathers second wife.... but even so they should keep track!!!
