Pointless. Boring Kenton, miserable Jolene. Was third time I have tried out Amex since start. Never again.

Agree entirely - but somehow preferable to the shrieking "comedy" option (that calls itself Dilemma) on R$ mainstream.

Absolutely Dave, smart-arses shrieking is not my cup of tea either. I remember panel game type radio shows from when I was a youngster, Frank Muir, Dennis Norden et al. They could be quite witty and clever but the genre is well played out, has even been parodied for years by the Beeb itself in ISIHAC.

So I too switched to AmEx omni. I thought how well acted Fallon is, I had never really noticed this before. Kenton was shown to be a complete idiot, Dusty wouldn't have liked it. Jolene well out of her comfort zone. It wasn't too bad really compared to the dross we've had in TA this week.

Radio 3 offers a good alternative to R4. No need to suffer Amex.

Hi Anna, for some reason I never think of switching to R3, maybe because I'm not a great lover of serious music, I must try it.

Indeed. My brother and I were only saying last weeken how wickedly funny is Jack Dee's Nicholas Parsons, but without and attempt to impersonate him - brilliant, even thoough Just a Minute can be pretty fuuny as well.

Apparently the new R4 Controller thought Sunday evenings were inherently depressing because the weekend was nearly over, so her solution was to replace Americana with the sort of mediocre comedy we get every week night.

Americana was brilliant - by the time I'd listened to the one following SATTC I'd almost forgotten the clunky misery of the latter ..

I was really really cross when they cancelled Americana ..

So did I. That''s probably why it was cancelled. I find that most of the things that I like tend to be discontinued post hate. It happens with brands of tights, particular scents and all sorts of things. Americana was just another example in a long list..

Sorry I wasn't clear .. I started a job (making more mince pies) just before the infamous episode - thinking if it was rubbish I'd not be wasting my time. And how right I was ..

The job took a long time and I ended up listening to the whole of that eves "Americana". It was a particularly excellent one ..

I enjoyed Americana too. Generally I think we're overinterested in America (e.g. coverage of the primaries, which are no more than preliminary county contests to decide who aill lead the opposition challenge to the incumbent) but I thought that Justin Webb covered interesting and less reported aspects of American life.

Sue Perkins, Sandy Toksvig, Arthur Smith, Richard Coles, Matthew Parris, Stephen Fry etc etc; all good broadcasters but so over-used by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ that I now groan whenever I hear their voices.

I'll add Yasmin Alabi-Brown (?spelling), although at least she's not pretending to be funny. Just clever and intellectual and right-on liberal-minded.
Quite enough to make me reach for the off switch.
I listened to Dilemma for a few minutes last night while I was doing the washing up. Just the usual non-funny ´óÏó´«Ã½ dross. And although too much from the USA tends to annoy me, Americana was much better than the replacements.

errr.. I thought Americana came off becuase Matt Frei [reporter from the beginning] went to Channel 4 in a role which was no longer DC based. I loved it - but it hung, like Alistair Cooke's letters, on the energy of the presenter. Never as good when there was a holiday stand-in.

Btw I do hope that Clare Balding's shift to Chanel 4 wont mean the end of her radio pieces.

Don't think you can judge Amex by random programmes. What convinced me of their charm was listening to the whole Clive slot in an afternoon during a weekend with a bad cold. I took Phoebe's travels in two big bites, too, and much enjoyed it. In general I find Archers eppies more digestible via the Omnibus. It's least listenable ime when you tune in with expectations at 7. 02 and find a barrage of wittering on over the AGA which merely raises your bloodpressure instead of punctuating the week's offerings.

Well, Gwyneth Williams told Feedback she was axing Americana because she wanted comedy entertainment on Sunday evening. There are other ´óÏó´«Ã½ journalists reporting from the US - Jonny Dymond for example - who could have replaced Matt Frei pretty well.

R4X is wall-to-wall 'comedy'. Why does it have to be on R4 at all? And how does that 6.30-7 p.m.slot get into the hands of some of the dullest 'funny people' I have ever heard.

Driven me to R2 6.30-7 - funnier, snappier, more informative.

And I've yet to find the "funny" bit of the Sunday night "comedy" slot, apart from Rory Bremner (first series very disappointing, 2nd series quite a lot better), but John Finnamore, Dilemma, etc., please spare me.

There is clearly not enough good comedy available to fill all the week-night comedy slots on R4 let alone adding another one on Sunday. I am fascinated by Gwyneth Williams' perverse logic: Sunday night is a bit miserable and blue due to the looming approach of Monday, so we'll cure that by making it feel just like every week-night.

Spot on; why is R4 so turgid to listen to on a Sunday night? It's worse than R2 used to be when I was a child when 'Cheesey Charlie Chester' and the soundtrack to commit suicide to 'Sing Something Simple' was on.

I've often wondered why we have all the finance and money programmes on Sunday (In Business, Money Box, etc.). Isn't it supposed to be a day of freedom from commerce and business? Is this because it's the only time that business people will listen??? (but then I can't imagine that anyone well up in finance or business would learn much that they didn't already know ...)

That'to compensate us for the interminably pious "Beyond Belief" (IMHO a great literal rather than crptic title) on a Monday!

The comedy has definitely gone down hill apart from The News Quiz and SIHAC, and even that can be a bit samey. As for Sue Perkins???? As soon as I hear her voice I have to switch off, she just isn't funny. R4 seem to use the same people over and over again and if you don't like them/find them funny/whatever you spend most of the week switching over, I have even started to listen ro Radio 3 to calm my nerves after bawling at theRadio when I hear Sue Perkins, Claire Balding, Shapi somebody or the other, who makes me look like comedien of the year, and many others, I used to love Stephen Fry.....
