A few sentences to summarise ...

Episode opens with Tracy and Donna (Keiths wife). The latter is a stereotypical air-head and makes Tracy sound sensible.

They spot Emma at the court room - Tracy blames it all on her!

Keith gets 4 years - 2 years to serve - rest on license ..

Tracy and Emma have a row afterwards and Tracy runs off .. leaving Donna without a lift. Emma kindly gives Donna a lift home and encourages her to eat - from party food in fridge .. She realises that Donna has financial problems ..she tries to be warn her to pay her mortgage. She explains she and Ed have financial problems also

Meanwhile Tracy spends the time becoming drunk and maudlin at Jaxx .. Kirsty tries to comfort her

Later on Donna is visited by a financial "adviser" .. Poochie (dog) growls at him ..

More details about episode (possibly) in a few days ..

< Later on Donna is visited by a financial "adviser" .. Poochie (dog) growls at him .. >

So likely public information broadcasting plot on the lines of "Don't trust people offering payday loans (or the like)".

Personally I enjoyed the episode, especially Enema giving Tracey what for, altho' Donna was even more stupid than Gary (and that's really saying something), preparing for a party on the totally unrealistic expectation that Keef would get off.

Here it is: sorry for the delay!

    EPISODE 1: TUESDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2012
THE HORROBINS: An Everyday Story of Feckless Folk

It is the day of Keith鈥檚 sentencing. Tracy has called to pick up Donna (Keith鈥檚 wife). She is rather taken aback to discover that Donna is not even dressed yet. Worse, Donna clearly thinks Keith is going to get off: she has bought in party food and has had her hair and nails done. Tracy tries to point out that people always get sent down for arson, but Donna won鈥檛 listen: Thanks to Tracy鈥檚 good suggestion, Keith grassed up the rest of the gang and they are bound to take that into account when sentencing.

There is a brief scene in Jaxx between Kirsty and Emma. Emma is clearly nervous 鈥 she breaks something (a glass?) and cuts her hand. Kirsty comments on Em鈥檚 smart attire 鈥 has she got a job interview? 鈥 but Emma doesn鈥檛 elaborate.

As Donna and Tracy go into court, Donna asks how Keith could have put her through this? Whatever did she see in him? Maybe she鈥檒l go on a short break to recover. 鈥淲hat with?鈥 replies Tracy. It was Keith trying to pay for your son鈥檚 wedding that got you into this mess in the first place!

The judge sentences Keith to four years, two of which are to be spent in prison. He takes into account both the early guilty plea and the fact that two children were nearly injured (鈥淲hy鈥檚 he going on about that? Asks Tracy. 鈥淕eorge is OK.鈥) Emma tries to slip out of the court, but Tracy pursues her. They have a major slanging match. 鈥淗ow could you do this to your own family?鈥 asks Tracy. She is (momentarily) taken aback to hear that George still has nightmares. She tells Emma that Donna needs an apology. Yes: retorts Emma 鈥 from Tracy! It was her who persuaded Keith to grass his mates up. How does Tracy think the other inmates will treat him when they find out he鈥檚 a grass, especially if the men he grassed up are in the same prison? 鈥淵ou Horrobins are all the same!鈥 blasts Emma. 鈥淵ou always think you鈥檙e right. I鈥檓 glad my surname is Grundy!鈥

Emma has phone conversations with Susan before and after the case. Four years doesn鈥檛 seem a lot to her.

Tracy storms off, leaving Donna stranded. She has no money for a taxi, so Ed and Em give her a lift home. She seems very vague and distracted (it is not clear how much is the shock of the sentence and how much is her normal state!), so Emma brews up for her. Emma spots some unopened financial letters 鈥 鈥淜eith normally deals with all that鈥 鈥 and opens them. The good news is that the mortgage is in Donna鈥檚 sole name, so Keith鈥檚 creditors can鈥檛 take the house off her. The bad news is that she is two months behind with the payments. Donna seems unaware that Keith even had creditors! Emma urges she talks to the building society and gets some financial advice.

Tracy is propping up the bar in Jaxx. She asks Kirsty if she鈥檚 ever done something that she thought was for the best but turns out to have made things a lot worse. She slides off her bar stool. Kirsty suggests she gets a cab, but she replies 鈥淚t鈥檚 OK. I鈥檓 just down the road. Nobody knows me there.鈥 [Synopsist鈥檚 note: I didn鈥檛 understand this comment. Tracy lives in Ambridge, doesn鈥檛 she?]

We hear a brief scene with an (un-named) cold caller. There is a brief tussle with a dog, then he talks to 鈥淏arry鈥 on the 鈥榩hone. He has just got some 鈥渘ew borrowers鈥 This area 鈥渉as been good for us before.鈥 Hopefully it will be so again.

After Emma goes, Donna sits talking to her dog Poochie and feeding him the party food. There is a ring on the doorbell. It is the mystery man from earlier: 鈥淕ood afternoon. I am from an independent financial assistance company. Are you having financial difficulties at the moment?鈥

    [Cue: Barwick Green]

[Synopsists note: There seemed to be a lot of phone calls to off-mike characters. I don鈥檛 know if this is to be this series Special Dramatic Decice - thought bubbles MK II.]

An interesting method of financial analysis

We in fact know nothing of the ownership of the property, and as Donna has no longer got Keith's income how can she pay it?

Presumably the mortgate statement Emma opened was solely in Donna's name. It's my understanding that the mortgage is normally in the names of the owners. It is not possible to have a sole mortgage on a joint property (that's according to an episode of Moneybox I heard recently).

It does beg the question how Emma is so aware of the workings of mortgages, given that she doesn't have one herself.

As to how Donna will pay the mortgage, according to the Ambex page of the website, she's a receptionist in a beauty salon, so she can't earn much. The impression I get is that the division of responsibility in their relationship was that Keith earnt the money and she spent it, so she is about to have a rude awakening, especially as they seem to have overspent even before Keith was arrested.

I can imagine that it is not normal/encouraged, but it is certainly POSSIBLE.

Though why Keef would have the house in her name is interesting. Could be to protect it from business debts.

Yes. Put that together with Donna's comment "I leave all that sort of thing to him" and it implies that Keith was probably weaving a rather tangled financial web. Let's hope all will be revealed.

    EPISODE 2
    THURSDAY 6TH DECEMBER

It is the morning after the sentencing. Tracy is cooking breakfast for her dad. She is extremely hung over. Bert comments that she hasn鈥檛 got that drunk since her mum鈥檚 funeral 鈥 and she drove home last night. He takes great delight in taunting her with talk of greasy food and moves onto the arrangements for Christmas. Eddie still has a turkey left, if they hurry. Ivy always used duck fat for the roasties. Bert will get the Port himself because he likes a decent drop. Tracy is concerned about the cost and the hassle, so Bert suggests they take up Susan鈥檚 offer and go to Ambridge View. No 鈥 Tracy won鈥檛 go there. Emma will be there and anyway Susan is just as bad.

Bert goes to Donna鈥檚 to do some gardening. Just has he鈥檚 finished and is about to get a drink for himself (and Poochie!), he collapses with pains in his legs.

Donna is at the salon. She is very absent minded again [I am still not sure how much is the shock of the sentence and how much is her natural state]. She has a [one sided] phone conversation with 鈥楽am鈥 asking him to help with the mortgage. Sam evidently suggests moving into Tracy鈥檚 but Donna is adamant that she is trying to keep the house, not get rid of it and anyway there wouldn鈥檛 be room for the dog as well as her. Clive walks into the salon and offers to take her for lunch. He has turned his life around. He has a job fitting bathrooms for a DIY store and he has met a girl (with whom he appears to be cohabiting). He ascertains that Donna is short of cash and presses a tenner on her. She only needs to ask for help - 鈥淵ou鈥檙e family鈥 鈥 and why doesn鈥檛 she come round for dinner one night? Clive knows how tough it is. Donna鈥檚 neighbour phones, but she ignores it.

It is a wet break at the school where Tracy is a dinner lady (someone needs to tell the Prod Team they鈥檙e called Midday Assistants these days). She and a teacher 鈥 Sarah 鈥 are getting drawing materials out for the children. Tracy is still feeling very delicate and blames it on the flu. When Sarah (who sounds like an extra from Claire in the Community) returns a few minutes later, she finds Tracy asleep with her head in the wax crayons and the children running amok with the paints. Sarah is initially very sympathetic but changes her tune when she smells alcohol. In the middle of her lecture, Donna 鈥榩hones Tracy and insists she goes and sees to her dad, who is with a neighbour [I think we only hear Tracy鈥檚 half of the conversation]. Sarah refuses to listen to Tracy鈥檚 explanation. As alcohol is involved, she will have to tell the head.

    Dum di dum di dum鈥

I thought that Nic was running the class. I was completely confused as to who the woman Tracey was talking to was supposed to be, until fairly near the end of the conversation.

This is all so *miserable*. The characters are unsympathetic, and the stories are awful. If there isn't something a bit more uplifting to even it out a bit soon, I don't think that I will be able to bear to listen to much more of it.

    EPISODE 3
    TUESDAY 11TH DECEMBER

Donna鈥檚 loan shark is hassling her for money. He drives her to the cashpoint, but she doesn鈥檛 have the 拢540 he is demanding (for a 拢500 loan). He transfers her onto his 鈥渕inimum payment scheme鈥 of 拢200 per week, at a much higher rate of interest.

Tracy tells Bert off for looking after Donna鈥檚 garden, but he wants to be useful. Tracy鈥檚 Deputy Head has established that she fell asleep when in charge of children, so there is going to be a Disciplinary Hearing. Bert is desperate to have Christmas at Ambridge View because Susan is a much better cook than Tracy. Bert tries every weapon in his arsenal 鈥 he even suggests that he and Gary go to AV and she stays at home, but she won鈥檛 budge. They discuss presents. Tracy wants everyone to have a good time. She is buying presents for Emma鈥檚 children 鈥 why should they suffer? She is buying Brad a tablet computer.

Donna visits Keith. She feels intimidated by the couple sitting next to her, who turn out to be members of the gang that he shopped. The man has a V sign tattooed on his back. Keith suggests asking Tracy for financial help. He tries to look at the bills Donna has brought with her, but it is not permitted to pass things from visitors to inmates. The bills are confiscated, the visit terminated and Keith subjected to a search. He tries to phone the utility companies, but the numbers are not on his approved list, so the phone won鈥檛 connect him. It will take a long time to get the numbers added 鈥 it is unlikely to happen before Christmas.

Donna gets a frosty reception from Tracy, who doesn鈥檛 even think Donna should be bothering Keith with 鈥榟er鈥 financial problems. Does she have any idea what a Lunchtime Supervisor earns? And Gary is on benefits and Bert is a pensioner. Why doesn鈥檛 she sell some of her bling? Donna replies that most of it is costume jewellery and she won鈥檛 be parted from the one decent set. Tracy retorts that she wishes she had that choice.

Donna meets Clive for a drink. She asks for a 鈥渟mall Pinot Grigio鈥 but he gets her a large brandy. She asks him for help. He readily agrees, but is clearly, at the very least, flirting with her.

Daft question, I know, because this is still a part of Planet Ambridge, but how on earth did Donna manage to take bills in with her? Unless they are lawyers or case workers - and their visits take place in a different room and rarely coincide with public visiting hours - visitors to convicted criminals are not permitted to take anything into the visiting room except small change for the beverage machine/tea stall, locker key, essential medicines which usually have to be kept by one of the duty officers in the room or a baby's bottle which often also has to be lodged with an officer until the bairn howls! Handbags, coats etc. have to be placed in a locker and all visitors go through security.

Of course that was the other daftness! Money and, in most establishments, things like bills and important letters, can be handed in at the desk and, after checking, are delivered to the prisoner without fuss.

Pockets have to be emptied at the security check and a prison officer will run hands through long hair, check behind ears and in mouths and quite often do a pat down search. Then they're are the sniffer dogs......

Still, in fairness to Donna, if you are not accustomed to it a prison visit is a traumatic business. Come to think of it, even if you are a regular visitor, it can still remind you that you are guilty by association!

Here is full synopsis - such as it is. Still not sure what Clive stole from the loan shark
    JPBS
    ***
    Synopsis Amex Dec 13th 2012 Episode 4
    *

Teachers on dinner duty (Sarah Martin and friend) are gossiping about Tracey .. how she lived with her sister after her relationship broke up. Sarah first relates how Tracey . became unwelcome at Susan's then gossips about Tracey chasing after - and virtually stalking Ifty. Apparently she'd heard it from a friend.. unfortunately at that moment Tracey turns up - she resents the gossip and says so . She then rudely tells the other teacher to leave and tries to get Sarah to apologise but the latter sneers about Jeremy Kyle and her drinking. Tracey (understandably) becomes angry and Sarah says she should watch her temper.

Next scene - Clive challenges the loan shark. He first beats him up then threatens him with more beating and gets him to promise to leave Donna alone. Apparently his name is enough to frighten the shark. Then he robs the money lender of his money (?), phone (?) and his book of borrowers. He then makes threats about the lender's mother who was ringing . It was all very unpleasant with Clive sarcastically saying "Happy Christmas" as he leaves.

Tracey separates two fighting children - hair pulling and kicking. Ms Martin takes over and says she has used inappropriate force and has her suspended by the head. Tracey protests her innocence but teacher is unpleasant - insinuates she is not suitable for the post and should be working at the supermarket. During the contretemps Tracy calls her a patronising cow .. this does not do her case any good ..

In the next scene we are at Donna's - she ticks off dog who is jumping on the furniture. She then leaves to buy food for the dog .. just after she leaves the phone rings ..

Keith is in gaol trying to get hold of Donna - but she is not at her work but at her lunch. He tries their home but unfortunately she is out ..(as we have heard).

Donna visits Clive at his flat - Clive tells her the girl friend is away for Christmas when Donna remarks on her absence. He comments on her appearance - and flatters her .. she laps it up. They discuss Christmas - Donna is unsure what to do - she has been invited to Tracey's but is reluctant. She says she misses Keith but at least will have the dog for company. She tries to encourage Poochie to make friends with Clive .. the dog growls and apparently goes for him. Clive remarks that Donna should take care - for someone could take them to court and get it destroyed for biting. Clive gives Donna money and hugs her - the dog is not impressed by this new development. Donna makes an excuse and leaves... she appears to have got Clive's measure.

Thank you for the synopsis, JPBS!

I thought that Clive mentioned 拢2,000 when robbing the loan shark, but I might be wrong.

Clive tells her the girl friend is away for Christmas聽

He said that Jackie is away with her own folks for Christmas (and there was also talk with Donna about how she is trying to get him house-trained or home-building or something similar - but tbh, I'm not convinced she even exists).

    .. the dog growls鈥β

鈥 thought "Poochie" was doing a reasonably good imitation of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari winning the 2006 Italian Grand Prix (Monza Sept 10th) (鈥A, check it out! it really is pretty good - for a dog!)

IIUC the 拢2k is the value of the debts recorded in the book - which Cloive will presumably now collect.

I thought (although I could be wrong) that there was 拢2000 cash inside the book. Loanshark gave Clive the book so he could remove Donna's details and Clive took the cash, which he later gave to Donna to 'tide her over.' Whether he kept the book as well, I'm not sure.

Was it just a hug Clive and Donna had? He certainly made an inappropriate comment (That was nice) afterwards.

Yes I think it was cash .. there was too little time for Clive the add up the debts .. and yes I do think he kept the book .. and possibly the phone too.

It looks like another loan goldfish story .. or rather something between a loan goldfish and a loan shark story ..

I suppose that it is possible that he saw a debt for 拢2,000 in the book. Did he have time to count cash either?

I don't bother to try to be logical about TA/Am. Ex. storylines.

I think the LS told him it was 拢2K. That doesn't sound like enough to be the total debts in his book.

    He's a loan shark, not a Barclay!

Donna borrowed 拢500, didn't she? 拢2000 would therefore only be four clients. Not a loan shark so much as a loan minnow.

And the only loan shark/minnow I have ever heard of who didn't do his rounds with a couple of heavy duty minders in tow! There's definitely an opening for a couple of savvy villains in Borsetshire.

Nah, wouldn't be needed, with the local villains so dim. Mind you, Clive might still be in for a spanking from an irate moneylender - they don't usually take kindly to being robbed.
