Mayo message has to say it all; or mostly!

One of the problems here if that we used to see over 160 characters in the box on the mayo menu. Now we only have about 35.

This makes it hugely more difficult to give a sense of what the post is about in the Mayo.

i am absolutely baffled by the number of threads started yesterday. I realise I'm adding to the problem by starting this one, but would like to try to encourage a more positive approach.

Was delighted to see Jont has some practical suggestions for making things more readable by using a Firefox Browser.

    Any other positives ?

    Please?.

    Hello, Dean

I think the number of new threads started yesterday was because everybody was playing with a new toy. It's already making more sense to me. I realise that many regulars on the TA boards must have little or no experience of other MBs because many things they find strange here are normal elsewhere.

I did start one new thread yesterday about the Intellectual Top 5 but it quickly dropped down and I didn't have the nerve to "bump" it up.

I'm using Firefox, and everything seems to be legible. It's just that the right-hand quarter of my screen has nothing at all on it. I would much rather that this space was used for the message text. I guess that the space is there to allow for people using different screen resolutions, but that can be allowed for automatically.

Yes Eilis, I'm sure that's part of it. But also, any of us starting a thread are going to have to be aware that we have only 35 characters with which to 'grab' people's attention.

It will probably be a good exercise in clarity of thought for me!

Have you seen Bex and Jont's thread about extending the page size?

    Sorry, Dean

I'm confused, I see as much of the message in the "mayo" as I ever did.

    do you?

I opened up the old bull mayo and this one, and in my view of this one the maximum number of characters in any mayo message is 36. In the old one it was up to 167!

    Big difference.

So what's going on? is it just me? (same thing on two different computers)

Sorry, hit the wrong button there!

Right for your thread I see "Conciseness Needed - Mayo message has to say it all or mostl...." That's about as much as I would have seen on the old boards, isn't it?

    Hi Eilis,

You are absolutely right above! I go on no other messageboard but the Archers and am well confused but determined to keep trying. You seem well informed so can I ask 2 questions.

-Are some of the old links still operating? When I click on the "Archers" in bold at the top of the page I go back to the old Homepage rather than a new one. Do you know if this is right or am I missing something blindingly obvious?

-When you put a new thread on, and then somebody answers some time later does it go back to the top of the list again? There is still only the one thread isn't there?

Sorry to be so dense but I'd rather ask and look dim than sit and stew!

No - the old boards allowed five times as many characters - which gives much more scope for giving a taster of what's in the post

Hello, glebe [do I know you?]

Sorry, another empty post from me because I got used to the way the buttons were and then they changed again when I extended the page according to jont's instructions!

I'm not sure about how the links work. I came over here before any link appeared on the old pages and I haven't been back. I don't intend to go back no matter what happens here.

Yes, everytime a thread is answered it is "bumped" to the top. That's the norm on many other messageboards. You can then see how active a thread is.

I'm not an expert. As I've said elsewhere the old boards mystified me as much as anything when I went there first. There was plenty wrong with them and I found their limits annoying. The concept of "time order" was alien to me but I adapted. No reason why I can't again.

The only thing which will drive me away is the constant whinging from some quarters.

    Sorry, Emerald.

After changing the layout according to jont's instructions the buttons are slightly different. I keep thinking I'm hitting "add original message" but I'm hitting post instead!
