When I have been away from the computer for some time, I want to look at the list of threads, to see if there are any new ones which sound interesting and have a look at them, and to see how the old ones have progressed.

I do not want to wade through dozens and dozens of random posts.

When I have caught up in thread mode, I will (or would have) then drop into 'Latest Messages' mode.

That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

That's how I did it too, Syd, but since the latest messages isn't available now, I think we are just playing around with the new board to see what we /can/ do. I'm sure things will settle down (as best they can) over the next few days.

I see your point, Syd, but the problem is that there is no latest message mode to drop into. If you are not catching up, but just hanging around, ML becomes a full-time job rather than just a pastime while doing other things (like working). I think I could perhaps just handle it if I were retired and glued to the computer. Neither is true. (Well, maybe I'm glued to the computer...)

    Hello, Syd

Have you tried clicking on "Your discussions" to see if there have been any replies to your post/thread?

Bun, I'm afraid we are in a 'no win' situation here.

I realise that there is no 'Latest Messages' mode, but your proposal in effect removes the 'Thread' mode, which a lot of people still use.

Hi Eilis. (I thought you'd left the sinking ship!!) smiley - winkeye>

Yes, I have 'Your discussions' open in another window, but that doesn't enable me to see new threads that have been started while I have been away from the computer.

I need a 'Mayo' mode for that.

We need both 'Thread' order and 'Time' order, but we ain't going to get the latter. But I'm afraid I don't see how the 'One thread per day' is going to achieve anything.

    Hi Syd

Yup - truly ghastly. Just popped in from the Real TB where Loot and a few others are sitting having the odd glug amidst the leftover packing cases. It's open till next week and I shall continue to lurk there meanwhile.

I think this is going to be far more hassle than it's worth - which is a shame.

Well, Syd, I take the odd look at the mayo anyway. You had to do that with the old way too because sometimes looking at posts in time order meant you had no idea what it was about. The most frustrating thing used to be that quite often I couldn't find where the thread had originated. That's why I like active threads being bumped up the mayo.

Er... I sort of got sucked in again. Yes, it's taking time to sort things out. It's like the first day in a new job wondering if you'll ever get the hang of it!

(Sorry, still haven't figured out to quote parts of messages).

I quite agree, Eilis, which is why I think the 'one thread a day' idea won't work.

    Syd

PS Great to see you 'sucked in again'.

Hi Syd. If you want to quote part of another person's post then when you click on "reply to this post" you will see a button undeneath the reply box "Add original message". If you click on this it will put the entire text of the original post into your reply. Then you simply delete the parts you don't want to quote. (But don't delete the < quote > at the beginning and end)

Of course you could still cut and paste if you prefer, just the same as on the old boards. HTH. BB

    Hi Syd.

As I said, I think the difference here is that I have a job and can't spend all my time trying to figure out what is going on when. At least one thread would emulate time order, whereas otherwise one is constantly clicking and searching for the action.

Naturally it's not very practical, because this board isn't set up for it, but I don't think it can be said that there's no point to it.

How one feels about this all depends on how one uses the boards. I like a lot of conversations all going on at once and bumping up against each other -- NOT having to peek at each compartment at a time. I never used the mayo unless I was looking at the boards after a long period of absence and had no time to read in latest messages order. It's for cherrypicking what you want to read, not for reading everything.

The current setup is just too strenuous for someone who has other things to do.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and keep on posting.

I hope we all find our own ways of making the new system work for us - and with a large amount of luck maybe we will get some improvements before long.

But, I am with Syd on not wanting one long thread. This works for those who only want time order. I don't. I like it in conjunction with other options, but not as my only default.

I don't think my preference is driven by the amount of time I have on my hands (and I really should not be here now, will have to scoot soon) as I am actually very time poor. It is more that the wiring in my brain works better with versions of thread order.

I'm not trying to shout down anyone else's preferences, but just want it borne in mind that there are a few people who would find a single thread to be very hard to cope with.

Bun, I quite agree that it all depends on how one uses the boards. However, not everyone wants to use them in the way that you do.

For instance, I certainly don't want to read everything. For instance, there are posters who I prefer to scroll past. I like to 'cherrypick'.

I am retired and spend far too much time in front of the computer, but I still wish to maintain a 'mayo' option, which your 'one thread a day' removes.

Will this be the first pink hat outing of The New Bull?

I suppose if someone started a 'general chat' thread each day we could use that for gossiping, then put specific topics (like techy queries) as separate threads. That takes away the spontaneity of the whole thing though, I guess.

And I still haven't worked out how to have separate windows open - I think it must be possible to have the 'mayo' and a 'chat' thread up at the same time so if anyone can tell me how I'd be grateful!

Lots of forums (not bbc) have a separate board for techie questions. I think we should have this. It would get used loads at the begiing then fade away, but always be there for newbies to use and gain confidence.

Open new ML front page. Press Control simultaneously with the messageboard part* you want, this opens a new window (for me, anyway).

Haysie, I agree with this, I duid sometimes use 'latest messges' but thread order was used far more by me. The email notification we are told we will have and I think that will help far more than a latest messages button. S x
