Anyone hear the R4 programme tonight?
I knew some of it from my very brief and illustrious career as a secondary teacher, but I didn't know quite how much the figures can be massaged.
Apparently there is a sort of NVQ that is equivalent to not 1 but 4 GCSE's (don't ask me why)!
A school in Telford did such a course (in IT) and had never had a failure! (obviously very demanding). Not surprisingly it shot up the league table.
What happened to "Education Education Education"?

It was counted as 3 GCSEs
Lady M
Is that any more justifiable than 4?
I would have thought 1 should be the very most.

Sorry bob, I meant 'education etc' was counted as 3 gcses
Those vocational courses *are* counted as 4 - great way to become an 'improving school' without having to actually *do* very much (it also gets the school extra funding - I don't know whether the prog mentioned that).
Sorry Lady M
Brain slowing at this time of night.
I don't think the programme mentioned funding, just the kudos from moving up the table. One Head terminated the interview.

Didn't hear this particular programme, bob - but did hear a head teacher called Bog Door being interviewed on Today this morning re school discipline issues. Bog Door? Surely not.
Listened a bit harder the next time he was name-checked. He is of course Bob Door, with nothing of the toilet about him, as Anne Widdecombe never said. MT

Hmmm. Good point. And tragic. A qual. in turning up at school or college is prolly on the cards, too. I see the certificates given out after short courses, whether in hair dressing (framed and proudly displayed, 'This certifies that Ampersand successfully attended a two-day course on hair conditioning.'
And on Excel, ect. 'This certifies that Kevin turned up the requisite twice for the Remedial course.' Unframed, but proudly displayed at the bottom of the desk drawer: drawer liners with kudos. And coffee rings.
Bob: only one question from me. Why did you type 'Education' four times?
