Just got the new DVD, brought about discussion with my son as to which is the best, the true to book, ´óÏó´«Ã½ account (well done auntie) or the superior production of the new version. Should the ´óÏó´«Ã½ bring up to date their version, remaster and enhance?

I think the original ´óÏó´«Ã½ radio version is best. Incidentally the reason it is "true to the book" is that it was written first - the novel is the book of the radio series, not the other way round.

Agreed, Tabby. We rented the recent film on DVD. I gave up watching half-way through. Dreadful, imo. The original radio series has never, could never be surpassed.

Eilis, the recent movie had a long, dreadful patch in the middle, but the new ending was nice and probably worth struggling through the "Vogon Minefield" sequence for. If you ever get the offer of a free loan of it, give it another go and just be prepared to skip 20 minutes or so in the middle... It does get better, honest! smiley - smiley

(But the movie's Zaphod was total carp.)

    Hi Ellis,

I managed to sit through the DVD to the end, but I didn't enjoy it much - it didn't add anything to what is by now a very well-known saga, and the pictures weren't as good as in the radio version. And whoever thinks that Marvin is small round and blobby, and closely related to the Smash martians?

    Hello, Peet

Yes, I think it was the long dreadful patch in the middle which put me off. I didn't even wait to see Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast. And yes, Zaphod was an imposter.

I bought a small plastic version of that Marvin; it's incredibly realistic - one of his arms keeps falling off! ;D

Indeed, Tabby, another imposter. Of course Marvin is a gloomy giant.

I assume you all noticed the original TV Marvin? In the queue at the Vogon office? smiley - winkeye

Stephen Moore? Or did they just use his voice on the TV version? Is this something like James Earl Jones and the Green Giant [or whatever he was.]

Gosh I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that. The timing was dreadful, and the whole thing got steadily worse the longer it went on. The planet workshop was good, and I liked the dolphins' song and dance act, but the rest was carp.

As someone else said, the pictures were much better on the original radio series!

No voice, sadly, just the body. And it wasn't even the original body - the ´óÏó´«Ã½ lost that years ago. They still have the original head, though, so it may have been that.

Alan Rickman wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected, but I'd still have been *much* happier if they'd used Stephen Moore's voice in the movie. smiley - erm
