Am considering taking small 'Dwells to the pictures and fancy this as it has Emma Thompson as well as Colin Firth- how bad could it be? _ but reviews vary wildly. Can any one tell me from personal experience if it was worth the price of admission [high, in our case, as we are many]?

Veronica, hello, don't think I've seen you here before!
16 year-old and friends went to it last week and loved it. Our local cinema had only put it on in the afternoon but it sold out and extra showings sold out as well.
She intends to go again tomorrow with some friends who have managed to round up some young'uns to take with them. So, tonight she's all dolled-up for a school formal, tomorrow she's my little girl again!

I took my kids (11 and 8) to see it last week. I thought it was much better than I expected - good cast, story rattled along. 11 year old enjoyed it as well, 8 year old said it was ok - laughed at slapstick but has a strong dislike for anything "soppy".
Hi Veronica
I took my smallest grandchildren (boy 8 and girl 5 ) to see it and they really enjoyed it - especially the ending.
It's not ever going to be a classic like Mary Poppins but it's good fun. Colin Firth doesn't play the overly romantic hero in this one - to be honest, his charcater's more like Hugo, Alice's husband in The Vicar of Dibley. All good clean fun, with enough rudeness to make the kids giggle, enough slapstick to make them laugh out loud and a bit of fairytale magic at the end.

I saw it last weekend, and I rather enjoyed it. In fact, I think most of the audience did, because at one point, there was almost an outburst of applause (I won't tell you which bit, because it might spoil it.) About the only thing I'd say against it is that I left rather feeling there was so much more they wanted to do with it and couldn't because of the time, so just gave a sort of hint at it. I'm not expressing that very well, but can't quite think of other words.
Brilliant film - really enjoyed it, as did little reds of 7 and 10. Laughed a lot and (tried not to shed a tear).

What of Mr Firth? Will I be happy with him or is he too paternal?

Oh, I think you'll find him quite satisfactory!

That is all I need to know, thank you. Have cinema hat on standby. Have already reported favourable posts above to offshoots and decided we are for the film and think perhaps Hallowe'en.
