Truly sinister.
Their founder was recently made a saint - fast track, I believe. Not so much Opus Dei as an Act of God. Current Pope's predecessor (in name, Benedict XVth) canonised Joan of Arc in 1920 after 400-odd years. The 20th century has a lot to answer for already.
For those of us who haven't heard it (and haven't time to LA just now,) could you give a little summary of what you're talking about, please?
Truly sinister - after all Ruth Kelly is a supporter (and she reminds me of a deeply scary teacher I had as a teenager). Can women join or are they not allowed full membership?

Hi Bearhug!
A Catholic secret society claimed by some people to run the Catholic Church. Others say it’s just a bunch of devout people! Apparently they feature in The Da Vinci Code (which I haven’t read). Google brings up about 100 million sites.
Cheers TÃr (:<
Thanks, TÃr.
I did think about googling, just after I posted.
I haven't read the Da Vinci Code, either, and despite having a list of books about a library long of things I'm going to read next, it's not on it, nor likely to be. Way too much hype.
I stayed in one of their university residences when I was a student (at the time I had no idea who they were, or I'd have run miles). A bit weird, at least, and possibly slightly sinister, in some cases.

trying to be sinister, wanting to be sinister but a bit over-hyped both by others and by themselves.
Aren't religious zealots scary? Whether Christian, Muslim or atheistic (I regard atheism as a religion just as illogical and just as frightening as all the others)
I am a Catholic and I have many Catholic friends but none of us take Opus Dei too seriously, we are all too "a la carte" and dismissive of such rot. (Ooops perhaps they are all members and are denouncing me as I post).
Perhaps I am being naive but I think Catholicism has moved beyond this stage historically, though of course some would like it to be otherwise. Now Protestant fundamentalism, that is different question, with a significant number of believers who seem as happy to be as extreme as the extreme zealots of Islam
