Hello, all. I shall be returning to the UK in February and/or March and was hoping I could meet lots of fellow Archers fans. I shall be visiting London, Walsingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, (probably) York, and locales in Cornwall and Wales.
Are there sizeable quotas of y'all (as we say in the American South) in those locales? Perhaps we could arrange some get-togethers at local pubs or restaurants for dinner/drinks and have fun and exchange transatlantic pleasantries. (Doctors everywhere agree--transatlantic pleasantries are safe, low in fat and cholesterol, and may even prolong your life!)
So what do you say? Are we going to PARTY or are we going to PAR-TAAAYYYYYYYY?

I forgot to add--I'll be visiting Loch Ness (Inverness and the surrounding towns) and Dublin as well. Perhaps Belfast, as well.

It's a pity nobody has replied to you JJP. Unfortunately I am unable to get to any of those places - a bit tied down at the moment!
If people are meeting in London, I can get there.
London's a strong possibility for me too - Feb and March just seem quite a long way off at the moment!
I have never PAR-TAAAYYYYYYYYed in my life and I'm known for going out on the lash.Less is more.Understatement is all.
I'll only come if I can get a free cd of your Ripper play.
BTW who the hell is up and posting to a messgeboard at this time of night? Surely not all the awake posters are abroad? Get to bed or you'll feel crap in the morning.

Well, we Americans do everything in extremes. So we must have a PARRRRTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY, not just a party.
I posted this message because I wanted to find out where the bulk of Archers fans who post on these boards lived, so that we could arrange a get-together whilst I'm in the UK.
As for a free CD of my Jack the Ripper play, MILLER'S COURT--I might bring one or two and give them away as "prizes."
But don't worry--I love to meet people and go to parties, but I hardly drink, don't do drugs, and don't go in for anything illegal or untoward. I'm as clean as the new-fallen snow! Any party I throw will be nothing but good, clean fun.
Damn--now no one will want to come to my party!
Prizes? What are we performing dogs?

NO, silly! I was thinking of devising a quiz to read out at the party, and the person who gets the most answers correct is the winner.
I pride myself on my knowledge of British culture/history, and I was going to prepare a very difficult British culture/pop culture quiz. You know--"Who knows more about British culture--you native Britons, or this Yank tourist and Anglophile?"
JJ don't even go there. The natives will wipe the floor with you given their knowledge of obscure music-hall artists of the 1950s. Or radio jokes from the 1970s.
There are at least two of us in Sheffield who could be up for a moot.

I would love to PAR-TAAAYYYY somewhere in London, preferably in March ( never go anywhere in February) although could make exception for chance of a good PAR-TAAAYYYYY if that was when it was happening.

Hallo Scheherezade. Nice to see you again after the Great Changeover. London is my `manor` too, so if we do have a PAR-TAAAYYYY there it would be good to meet up with someone I just `know` from these boards. London's a strong possibility for me too - Feb and March just seem quite a long way off at the moment!Â

quezzie--How nice! I wanted to go to Sheffield to attend a production of THE ROMANS IN BRITAIN at the Sheffield Theatres. Perhaps we can all go there, then to the pub afterward.
Martine--You insult my honor/honour!
Seriously, I'll already know the answers to my quiz. But the questions will be VERY obscure--I want to see how many of you "natives" will know the answers.
Ambridge--How nice of you to be so encouraging! And I see from your use of the term "manor" that, like me, you're a fan of the great film THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY.
Seriously, I'll already know the answers to my quiz. But the questions will be VERY obscure--I want to see how many of you "natives" will know the answers.Â
For example?

Nice try, Sea Nymph.
Seriously, I'll ask a question like:
"Laurence Olivier found a wife while appearing in the ORIGINAL production of John Osborne's play THE ENTERTAINER. True or false?"
Now, most theater buffs will think, "Olivier met his third and final wife, Joan Plowright, in the original stage production of THE ENTERTAINER because she originated the role of his 'daughter.'"
That's wrong.
Dorothy Tutin (a former mistress of Olivier's) actually originated the role of his daughter. Joan Plowright REPLACED Dorothy Tutin a little way into the production's run.
Clever, no?

JJP, thread collision alert: if you visit in March, could you extend your visit to Paris in the first weekend in April? See the Paris mini meet thread for details.

Ms. E Yore--I certainly will be visiting Paris for a day whilst I'm in London. I might also be in France and other European countries for a few days taking either a WW1 or WW2 battlefields tour. I'm almost positive I won't be in Paris early in April. But thanks for the invitation, and I'll certainly let everyone on these boards know when and where I'll be in the UK.

Clarification for Post #17--
In the interests of total accuracy, I would have to reword that question.
It should read, "Laurence Olivier met his third wife when she ORIGINATED the role of his daughter in the original stage production of THE ENTERTAINER. True or false?"
My bad.
Or maybe, AF is just hard.

I`d better dispel all doubts or you won`t want to invite me to your Par-taayyy. I am not a shaven-headed gangster type or a fan of The Long Good Friday (sorry to disappoint, JamesJeffryPaul.) I am just a girly ( well, womany ) who doesn`t like nasty, violent gangster films. But I do watch The Bill and Eastenders and the like, where the gangsters are never too gangstery, so I`ve picked up terms like `manor`.
Or maybe, AF is just hard.Â
Apologies AF and JJP.
Its a sort used ironically, not like the hard guys who reckon they control areas, but I spose we all lived in manors once.
"I hardly drink, don't do drugs, and don't go in for anything illegal or untoward. I'm as clean as the new-fallen snow! Any party I throw will be nothing but good, clean fun."
Just a couple of questions JJP
Do you want anyone to come or not?
Do you tell lies?
If you don't tell lies are you sure you want to mix with us lot?

careen--Oh. I see.
Ambridge--How nice! True ladies like you are rare in these strident, bra-burning, Alpha-girl days.
Count Roger and locky--Great! I will probably be going in February or early March and will, within the next few weeks (as soon as plans are finalized), post all the details on these boards.
Count Roger--Are you a friend of Major Tom's? I hope not. We all know Major Tom's a junky.
(Prays Count Roger is a David Bowie fan.)
And as for my truthfulness--To quote Tony Montana (Al Pacino) in the remake of SCARFACE, "I always tell the truth--even when I lie."
Much as I love party games, if we have a London meet for all these people, most of whom will not have met before, wouldn't it be more fun just to talk lots and get to know everyone? Plus of course some skipfuls of whatever takes our fancy and some decent nosh?
Ambridge Forever - what a surprise to find you live in the big city and not in Ambridge! It would indeed be nice to see the real person some time!

Scheherezade--Well, the quiz can come later, after we all get acquainted.
We can have to the quiz after you begin to bore us with your endless tales of Aladdin, et al.
<>
Oooooh!! you look like you are on a promise!
Yayyy.
Did I upset someone with my one mention of Aladdin recently then? SO sorry!
Ah dear, on the old boards I'd have replied to the original post but as it is I'll just stick this on the end!
I'm in Sheffield and always up for an TA get together!

JJP, I think this is a transatlantic use of "originated". I would have said (if pushed) that the originator was the playwright. Perhaps
"Larry met his third wife in the original stage production of THE ENTERTAINER. She was the first person to play the role of his daughter. True or false?"
Tagging onto the end of a thread here: I won't be back in the UK for those dates, otherwise I'd be up for parties in the non-exuberant lower case.
BUT, did I hear of fellow ML/Archers fan Ralph in Baku? Because I am having a seriously rubbish time at the moment and would happily micro-meet with anyone not connected with work.

Achilles--You're right. Strange that the differences between our common language are so VERY small and unpredictable, yet so significant.
"The English and the Americans are two peoples, separated by a common language." I've heard that Shaw originated that saying--does anyone know if Shaw really originated it, or was it someone else?
Hi, Bonsie, I've warm-maled you to check your owl is how I interpretted it before passing it on!
