What is that enormous planet in the evening sky at the moment? It is huge. I have a friend who went to London recently and he said it's visible from there too, so it's not a Southern Hemisphere thing.
it really is an enormous planet. it is bugging me a bit. not in a bad way, but I can understand how people got the idea into their heads that the stars can affect your life. You notice it, and it kind of snags your attention.

Mars, or so I'm told by youngest daughter who's taking GCSE Astronomy as part of her 6th form enrichment!
Hello, dagesh, may I send a snifter down your way?

Yes you may indeed, Eilis. I'll have a Bombay Sapphire and tonic, please. I'll raise a glass to your health. Cheers!
Mars, eh? Da-da-da dum, dum, da da dum!

Mars? It's currently rising near the east about now (8pm, i.e. 7pm GMT). My planetary chart puts it [what is the correct technical term?] at about 45 degrees, i.e in Aries.
I have just found out that tonight Mars is at its closest to Earth.

Morning, Yer Ladyship (fawning tug of gnomey forelock)
Dinna worry - Mars will be around for quite a few days/weeks being prominent, so there will be new chances to see it bignrednglowingnthesky.

Yep. It won't be as close again for 13 years.
Tonight is the closest - best seen just after sundown.

You know what? I don't think the one I'm referring to is Mars after all. On the way home last night I saw Mars glowing redly on the opposite side of the sky to this other whopper. The one I am referring to is white, not red, and it really is huge - enormous. A splodge of light, rather than a point.
Someone I know suggested it was Venus. My curiosity is really piqued now.

Looks like the bright one could be Saturn, Dagesh:

thanks Roy. I can't really understand those star charts because I don't have a sense of north and south and so on. I think I am going to have to phone the South African Observatory at Sutherland and ask them.
but thanks for the link. Hope you're well - I have always really enjoyed your tasteful (tasty?) contributions to ML!

I asked Jaques at church and he confirmed what I thought: it is Venus that is troubling me so.
