This is not one of those hoax e mails, that tell you to drive yourself to hospital with a heart attack, coughing all the way, this is true, I have left out all details or how i know this to respect confidentiality - a youngish person in our region purchased some medication from a chinese medicine therapist and a week after taking it needed a liver transplant (which luckily happened in time to save her life) I am an open minded and enthusiatic user of alternative therapies but this has made me a bit wary.
I also know someone who has liver damage from Chinese herbal medicine, and is now of great interest to a consultant and his underlings.
She ended up with the kind of liver damage that he had only previously seen in alcohol abusers.

Yup . . . I too showed rather weird liver function tests a few years ago which resulted in my having a biopsy. Never occurred to me to tell the GP that I'd been taking medicine offered by Chinese doctor.
These days I'm (a) much more circumspect about alternative remedies and (b) I always consult GP before trying things. Fortunately GP is quite switched on to homeopathy, acupuncture and the like. I haven't touched the herbal "cures" since hearing the horror stories and - rather belatedly - relating them to my own circs a few years ago.
But apparently my liver is much better now. Phew.

There was a very interesting thread in Old Mustardland about this very topic, in the Village Hall, a few months ago. IIRC Laura S had a lot of the gen on the subject. If you bump this thread up tomorrow morning you might catch her and she will be able to share what she knows about it.
cheers
