Has anyone been to China recently? I want to know about the ATMs in Beijing (are there lots, are they multi-lingual) or do you have to take some yuan in with you? And if so, where did you get yours and what was the commission charge?

Beeny, I know nothing about this but while waiting for someone better to come along: aren't foreigners in China supposed to use renmenbi and not yuan? Or has that changed?

I think there isn't free foreign exchange in China, as far as I know.

I've heard about renmembi but can't remember what it was smiley - doh .
I booked this holiday ages ago, forgot about it whilst we had spring and summer, and now it's almost time to go - with hardly a bag packed or cats fobbed off onto neighbours.
I also want to know about tipping. You never know with this board, someone's bound to know the exact answers!! smiley - erm

Renmenbi are the 'yuan' only foreigners can use and you get them from state agencies at a fixed rate of exchange. You bring in your dollars or pounds or euros and they give you your renmenbis. Since the locals can't use them without going to prison or worse, I suppose, it undercuts any possibility of black-market exchange.

Take Amex traveller's cheques, if I were you. And a Rough Guide to China or Easy Planet or some such guide ought to give you the basic info on not getting yourself in a forced labour camp on an extended holiday.

Beeny, this site on the web gives clear indications - it would appear that everyone in China now uses renminbi:

We were in China in September. Everyone in China uses the same currency nowadays and you can get money from ATMs. You can also use your mobile phone - we had better reception than in many parts of the UK.
