Right, it's been two weeks and a day. We need to get on with life, so let's all pool our knowledge. I hope the following will be of use to at least a few of you!
1. Posts made during the day are 'reactively moderated'- ie the mods look at them only if somebody asks them to - but posts made overnight have to be passed by mods before they appear, for some reason. So when your message is posted, you will not see in the discussion immediately, you will see a box that says the moderators are considering it, and you will think you have erred in some way. You haven't. Before too long the post will turn up.
[Mr K, if you are reading this, would it be possible to get a message to this effect to appear on screen at the relevant times? It would save a lot of perplexity from new posters.]
2. You can get a lot more messages to appear on screen at one time by typing &show=200 at the end of the URL (the address in the white bar at the top of your screen, under the toolbar) and clicking on go. Unfortunately you have to do this for each discussion, but it's still helpful if you're reading a long one.
3. If you click on the title of the discussion you see the first 20 posts. If you click on the link in the Latest Reply column you go straight to the end of the discussion. This saves time if you've already read most of the posts in a discussion.
4. The 'Your discussions' link at the top of the screen is a link to a list of all the discussions you've posted to. It shows when you last posted and at the right it shows how many posts there have been to that discussion since you last viewed it. If you click on that it takes you to the relevant point in the discussion. That helps to get some idea of whether anybody else might have replied to your post.
5. When you post, if you are replying to another post, you have a blue button to click if you want to quote the original post. This helps to make it clearer who you're replying to. You don't have to leave the whole quote in! Or any earlier quote. You can delete as much as you want from inside the quote marks (ie < and >. If you delete the quote marks the box won't appear. Make sure that your words are completely outside the < and > that mark the beginning and end of the other person's words, or else your words will also appear in the box.
6. The post you're replying to will appear at the foot of the reply box. Unfortunately it doesn't have the message number on it, so at present if you don't want to quote it but do want to make it clear which one you're replying to you have to memorise it before you click on the reply box. Alternatively, right click on the reply button and you will have the open of opening up your reply box in a new window, so you can still see the whole discussion as you compose your post.
[Mr K, again it would be helpful if when the message you're replying to gets pasted into the bottom of the reply box, its number was shown too. Alternatively, it would be even more helpful if there was a line of script automatically put into the beginning of the reply that said which message one was replying to.]
7. You can have any screen name you want! Look at the top right of your screen and you will see 'Your nickname is [whatever it currently is]. Change this'. Click on 'Change this' and you can change your screen name to whatever you fancy.
Over to you!

That's a good idea to gather ideas in one thread, Dragonfly.
I find Jont's amendments very useful (losing all that mustard on the RHS; automatic reply and date stamp):
[Broken link removed by Moderator] (see over in N&Q).

4a. If you click on 'Last contribution: 2 hours ago' on the left, it takes you to ..er.. your last contribution, which is also useful to see if someone has replied to you.

Clause 4 *
Amendment i] a)
When replying in a longish thread of say 100 messages, if you reply to say message 65, your post will arrive as no. 101 . If checking back using Last Contribution option, you will be whisked to end of thread, thereby potentially missing points made in posts 65 - 100. Caveat lector [no relation to Hannibal]
* Not the Clause 4 of blessed memory, obviously.

Martine, is that you talking in foreign again?
Nope your honour, it's a frame-up. I am becoming more devious.
Martine, is that you talking in foreign again?Ìý
Not on mine it doesn't, pj, it takes me to my last contribution, f'rinstance, in the long Peta thread (now with 598 messages) it takes me to my last contribution which was number 572, and was 6 days ago.

I second and third and fourth that suggestion cara.

You're both right, of course, Syd. Via 'Your Discussions' you can get to either 'Last contribution', which is your last contribution to the discussion, or 'Latest post', which is *the* latest post. If these are one and the same, of course, nobody has replied to you or made any other points on that discussion since you were last there. If they aren't, anything could have happened. I don't think many discussions get so long that you can't see fairly quickly what's been said since you last had a look.

Thanks Draggers. (Useful thread, btw).
In fact, I think I misunderstood pj and I can see their point about missing the posts between the one that you are answering and your answer.
Apols, pj.

Draggers, perhaps this could form the basis of a new FAQ page.

I posted this, mentioning Jont's thread over in NQ. It is totally baffling why this has not appeared yet, as it was only pointing peeps towards the improvements he has made!

Oops! Butterfinger. Let's try again.

Similarly, the number of "new posts" shown in each entry of the CONVERSATIONS list in your Personal Space in h2g2.
What makes this less useful than it could have been, IMHO, is that tells of posts that have been made since your most recent one. Who knows whether or not any of them were replies to your most recent one?
I don't think many discussions get so long that you can't see fairly quickly what's been said since you last had a look.Ìý
You might be right, there. The task might indeed be simple for a single thread, but there is still a problem: the task of getting yourself up to date must be done separately for each thread.

FAQs - yes, we could do with some, couldn't we.
Important point: I haven't mentioned Jont's awesome work on improving the layout because, as a technonumpty I am waiting for the Early Adapters, to slip into marketing-speak, to help him perfect it and then I'll see. I am usually a Last Adapter (eg still have no DVD player, though expect this to be remedied soon). Cleverer and more intrepid people than me can go to N&Q for details (he uses the name StudioJ here, I think).

W-L - I haven't mentioned h2g2 because apart from one post at the Hub I haven't had anything to do with it, and don't intend to. I think the place for instructions on how to use h2g2 is over there, to be honest.

Draggers, I think that if we want this sort of an FAQ page, we're going to have to write it ourselves.
The one on Olde Mustardlande was written by MLers, the recent updates by Rosiet, IIRC.
Hence my comment that your thread would be a good starting point.

Thanks, this is all really interesting Draggers.Your suggestiond for Keri are well tyhought out and I wouild imagine reasonably easy to fulfill.
Please could you tell me if you /always/ have to refresh to get the up to date version of pages or if it's just me.e.g.yesterday,every time I clicked on the MFC conversation it said it had 3 replies.I then had to refresh to find the rest of the day's replies. This seems to happen to me in every thread so far, even when I go to my own contributions, but I haven't seen anyone mention it.(not that I've read that many threads so sorry if this one has been dealt with already)

#22, Wendy, I have to keep refreshing as well. I also suspect that in the afternoon the times shown in the 'last post' column get seriously slowed down.
Link to this forum: Construcitive discussion! Top MB tips needed
Hello, Wendy, long time no post! Yes, I do have to refresh quite a lot. If I click on a link I get the up to date version (I think), but if I just click on the back button as I often do I get the version I saw before.
Link to this forum: Construcitive discussion! Top MB tips needed
ahh yes,it doesn't like you using the back button, does it.I'll have to try to remember this, perhaps this is partly why I get the older versions. Thanks M.x
