listening just now to an Echo & The Bunnymen record made me think, again, of memorable gigs I've been to. I know this has sort of already been done but as I've continually unsubscribed from 'conversations' I can't find the 'What's the best gig you've ever been to' one and i can't be bothered to go back more than ten pages on the mayo to find it.

    so here goes.

I bought a ticket for a fiver to a 'secret' Echo & The Bunnymen gig way back when (I seem to recall it was between their first and second album).

The info given out was to be a t Marble Arch to catch a coach and to 'dress appropriately'.

Coach arrives, loads up with lots of people dressed in military style apparel (I was sprting my 1953 Berlin Police coat), off we trundled ending up in Buxton where the driver opened the doors and turfed us off. Loud music and bright lights led us to the opera house there. A splendid gig was had by all. We got back on the coaches and drove across the Penines, stopping briefly to allow a sheep that was sitting in the middle of the road to get out of our way. Back into Lunnon at some silly time of the day, no tubes, walk to Liverpool Street form Marble Arch, train from Liverpool Street to Billericay, walk from there back to Bas!

    Great time!

Another. The Durruti Column, Joy Division and The Buzzcocks at The Rainbow. Got hit in the forehead by a drumstick hurled into the crowd at the end of 'Moving away from the pulsebeat'.

    Another. Fishbone at the Astoria!

The Young Marble Giants at the Clarendon Hotel Hammersmith, boiling hot in there. Sat on the edge of the stage.

Jesus Jones at the Town and Country, the sensimillia, bright lights and white boiler suits!

Gary Clail (when he was a bit 'lardy' and had his face covered bt bandages)/Tackhead/Mark Stewart + Maffia at the Astoria when Lee Perry bent across to check how many shots he had left on his camra while one of the 'mad crew from Basildon' that i was wwith was burning a big lump of hash so he could 'put one together'

Meat Beat Manifesto at that place in Mornington Crescent (used to be The Music Machine - think it was called the Camdem Palais at the time)

The Clarendon! Huzzah! What a great place that was.I saw Ring supporting Nik Turner's Fantastic Allstars there.Ring didn't play on the stage but set up in the middle of the ballroom floor, had a custard pie fight and did juggling tricks.

I also remember seeing the execreble Demented Are Go there

saw Nik's Inner City Unit at a Hawkwind all dayer at the Lyceum many many moons ago. Lemmy almost trod on my hand that day. He and Nik joined the 'wind onstage for a rousing rendition of 'silver machine'

Support for the YMG @ The Clarendon included Furious Pig

    another memorable gig.

The Stranglers at Battersea Park. After spending most of the afternoon up The Shed, Stamford Bridge, schlepped across to the park, climbed a flippin high fence and saw this one. Good strippers!

The Wedding Present always did a good gig.

The Smiths and The Jam and The Fall and Elvis Costello never disappointed.

And Bauhaus made a big impression on a fifteen year old!

ooh, The Fall at Essex University. Got a bit widdled in the Union Bar on cheap Directors. As a consequence the support band was a total blur but as soon as The Fall hit the stage, what with Brix in a catsuit looking v. gorgeous behind that equaly gorgeous Rickenbacker (drool to the power of two) I soon woke up. Fantastic.

They were great at Finsbury Park too in support of Sioxsie and The Banshhes, as were Wire.

I've led a very sheltered life and only ever been to one "gig" - as opposed to a "concert"!

But I'll never forget it - Peter Gabriel about 21 yrs ago at Hammersmith Palais (?) There he was in full gleaming make up - launching himself into the audience and the whole crowd on their feet as soon as he began Salisbury Hill. His acoustic renditon of "Here comes the flood " was spine tingling.

    Oh, Peter, Peter!

    sigh.

    GR xx

I was at that Gary Clail gig, too, Leggsy - but I wasn't from Basildon - Chelmsford was my stomping ground then!

Wow! Did you get to many On-U Sound gigs?

The 'mob' I used to attend with were always asking Adrian Sherwood to 'turn it up' !
