There is a myriad of wonderful nicknames on these boards and I'd love to know how or why people chose them. I also wonder what the bit in brackets means that some posters put after their nicknames? I really liked the lagoon idea in TA on Tony's farm a few months ago but couldn't quite bring myself to be called PooLagoon!

I never liked my original nickname, chosen quickly when I first delurked (lurkinglaurie). One day I was listening to the radio and the traffic report came on - trouble on the anti-clockwise M25. I thought I would join the other aunties in ML by becoming Auntie Clockwise.

It's just the on-line name I use on various sites.I am male btw. Some posters seem to be confused about this.
I believe the number (in the parentheses) following your message board name, is your unique ID, and therefore I presume there can be more than one user with the same name but the IDs will differentiate one from another.

When I first signed on I wanted to be Aunt Laura but was told the name was already in use, therefore had to think of something else.

My ML nickname /was/ "Peet McKimmie". Then the ´óÏó´«Ã½ decided to introduce "Single Sign-On" and forced me to use my h2g2 nickname in Mustardland. Now they're getting ready to abandon "Single Sign-On" in favour of "´óÏó´«Ã½ iD". At the moment this is limited to either 30 characters or 50 characters, depending on who you believe, and only "A-Z", "a-z", "0-9", "_", "-" and spaces. A lot of people, even those with "short" nicknames like Lady M., are going to be screwed around by this.
Oh, and my name? It's a long-held tradition on h2g2 to apply club memberships, achievements and short-term announcements to your board name. I've worked hard to build this up over the last ten years or so.

I chose Primrose Path because it doesn't mean what it sounds like and that amuses me.
Laura in Lothian has subsequently told me of the Primrose League
which is also very very not me, and that also amuses me. But then as you will see from some of my posts, I am easily amused.
PP
ps Where posters have words in brackets after their names it sometimes indicates a previous nickname, as a couertesy (?sp) to posters who might not otherwise recognise their posting style.
Except for Eliza Bennett. I don't know why she does it

"Member names will be failed if they...
Appear to impersonate someone else"
From the House Rules
It was a revalation. God visited to me one night. I awoke and there he was in the corner, wearing a wetsuit. And he said:
'Alsouble.'
'What.' I whimperered.
'From today forth, and fifth, you will be known as alsdouble,'
So I said.
'Right.'
It was illuminating.

Yup, but the names are ´óÏó´«Ã½-wide. It's possible to have the same name as someone who never posts on the same boards as you, so it's not considered "impersonation".
For example, here are the 153 occurrences of "Dave" on the system:

So God forced the "d" upon you? Bummer.
Some are born with ML nicknames, some achieve ML nicknames, and others have ML nicknames thrust upon them.

I wonder how many people(if any)have more than one nickname..and use both on the same messageboards, without anyone suspecting it?
I had a short period of trying to use two names as an experiment, but got so mixed up that I reverted to one.

Hi
I chose to put my real first name.
Why not, I thought? No skeletons in your cupboard, you're not famous - they won't even know if yer male or female (female bwt, don't ask..my mum loved Kris Kristofferson who is, erm, a boy).
You're cool, calm, in control. As always kris.
Oho, then ML took my soul when I was distracted (usually by Angua, Mermaid and the rest of the ML crew on whose comical threads I usually lurk and laugh to my little self)
And now...?
Still not famous,
No longer cool..
No longer in control..
Still called Kris..
maybe..

(or even into our trap)
When I started posting without lurking for very long I thought that, since this was an Archers message board, most people would have Archers related nicknames. Assuming all the obvious ones would be taken I chose to call myself after a fairly obscure, long deceased character.
My name is really Alan Sty but my spelling is atroshus.

Because twice the boards prevented me from logging in as Lovewood, which itself was a plot device in Rising Damp and also the name of a band I know. Also, it just felt a pleasant, natural moniker. HS is a flag of convenience hit upon whilst listening to Ogdens Nut Gone Flake, and since my migration here, appended to, having been inspired by another poster. The addenda change daily or near daily and are mostly completely meaningless.

I was born and brought up in the county of blue remembered hills (Shropshire) and it seemed appropriate, being also Archers country.
It took ages to think of a board name and I didn't want to use one that didn't seem exactly right.
Sometimes I think I should get out more.

Are you Posh's friend lovewoood then? Golly, I had no idea!
When I first wanted to join way back in 2001, a majority of posters were using either their real names or names that looked real. I didn't want to use my real name but couldn't hit upon any name I liked, so just continued lurking. When I did finally join in 2002, Winnie the Pooh was already taken as a board name and eeyore spelt E. Yore came to me in a moment of inspiration. At one point I added (Ms.) to the name as peeps thought I was a he. Now the bit between parentheses is a choice insult lobbed at me by a single-issue poster which I have adopted as a banner.
(Not as good as Posh being called a chicken abusing liar, though!)

Yours is one of my favourite board names. Didn't Rosemary Sutcliffe pen her autobiography with that title? Was it also an A E Housman line?
My own name used to be eristheapplethrower in honour of the wifie whose toss of an apple into a race kickstarted the chain of events which started the Trojan War. Eris was the goddess of discord.
Then things got a bit ill tempered on the board for a wee bit and I thought maybe time for a change and changed my cloak to that of Eris's sister, Aneris the goddess of harmony.

She did, and I'm ashamed to say I've never read it. Denis Potter used it for the title of a play too.
It was originally a line from a Shropshire Lad by AE Housman, as you say:
What are those blue remembered hills
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content
I see it shining plain
Those happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.
