Just seen the new Avengers film. Pure superhero fun. Full of massive explosions, stunts, Hulking, Whedon-wit, massiveness. And yet each character gets their moment and a chance to shine too.
I'm more of an X-Men gal, so I didn't quite get if the Black Widow (I LOVE what Whedon does with female characters) had superpowers or was just pure natural awesome. I also didn't quite see where the Hawk guy was getting all his fancy arrows. Not that it mattered in the slightest.
The giu playing Loki was brilliant.

I take it you dressed as one of the characters ?
Tom Hiddleston is indeed a fine actor.

Um, yes. Lady-in-rainproof-coat. If it rains, I *own* it.
Not seen Thor or either of the Iron Man films, but loved Captain America
Will I still enjoy The Avengers?

I haven't seen any of the forerunners (although I think I have to watch the Iron Man films now), and still thoroughly enjoyed Avengers - and I even understood most of what was going on!

There was a brief 80s craze for girls to wear just a raincoat and heels. Worked for me. Once I got heels big enough.
I see that this film has provoked fan fury about Sam Jackson being black. No idea why it's come up this time - after all his character has already been in several films and has been black in the comics for at least 10 years, probably longer. Heigh ho.

I've only ever seen a white Nick Fury in the comics - mainly interacting with Wolverine. But is there a better actor that fits that role than Samel L Jackson?
Nick Fury is black? I thought it was only the Hulk that changed colour

Only the Hulk changes colour ... Fury remains constant throughout ...

There was a similar row about Idris Elba in 'Thor' (which is very good incidentally. You should see it). Some nonsense about he can't be black because he's a norse god, as though that's the unbelievable bit about a film featuring frost giants, a mighty bridge from Asgard to Eart and Chris Hemsworth's acting.

There was a similar furore over a character in The Hunger Games - despite the fact said character was actually black in the books; some readers evidently missed that ...
And then there's nuBSG's Starbuck. And Boomer.
Maybe it's me being pointlessly contrary, but I think it's almost a duty of everyone, particularly the movie industry who can do it so deftly, to flame such indignation. It might provoke some spontaneous combustion.
Glad to hear it's good. I'll certainly see it at some time or another
I enjoyed Iron Man and X-men I see Terminator Salvation is on @ 9.30 on C4 on Saturday. A friend said it wasn't that good, but I'm inclined to record it anyway. Anyone else seen it?
While we are on the subject of films, I thought The Bank Job (C4 Sunday @10.05) was quite entertaining. Not SF, though
I seem to be being taken far too literally these days.Worrying because I never really mean anything I say.Certainly not in here at least

Personally I think they should have a cast a real russian instead of Scarlett Johansson.
Idris Elba is brilliant in Thor incidentally with almost nothing to do he steals every scene he's in. Although that's not a challenge when it comes to Mr Hemsworth it's pretty good considering the rest of the cast.

I'm not Scarlett Johansson's biggest fan, but I thought she was good as the Black Widow. But then, I know next to nothing about the Black Widow, and Whedon has written her a strong attractive role in Avengers.

I saw it in the cinema. I liked it. Rees and the guy from Avatar are really good in it. Unfortunately my sister pointed out that Christian Bale uses his Batman voice too often, and he does, and it's very distracting.
I think she was Daredevil's girlfriend for a time, but that's it.
I'll give it a whirl, Angel.
Don't suppose you've heard if St Joss is doing any more TV stuff any time soon? The Watcher has never materialised.....

Dame Bouncy did post a hopeful link about a Watcher series (on the non-´óÏó´«Ã½ thread), but I think he might be concentrating on films and webstuff at the moment. :- (

Wasn't that Elektra?
Elektra was the love of his life.BW was before her time I think.Never really liked the soapy aspects of the Marvel universe.Much more fun when it's clobberin' time
What did everyone think of the films Daredevil and Elektra?

So they did. Looks like she's been associated with most of the Marvel universe at one time or another!
Without the "soap opera" elements we wouldn't have The House of M - love that story.
Whedon is a legend. And isn't funny how man actors seem to make it from Home and Away to Hollywood like Hemsworth.

And the lady who played Angel. And the redhead.
And Guy Pearce from Neighbours.
Never saw Elektra because I rate Elektra:Assassin too high as a piece of art to have it spoilt by something which can only fall short.By all reports it's a bit of a stinker so I don't think I've missed out.
As for the Daredevil flick, it's flawed and it looks a bit shonky but I'd rather see it than the first Spiderman film.As I've said before the bit with the spinning safe combination dials is perfect.
I thought Daredevil was OK, and thought Elektra wasn't bad. But then I enjoyed Catwoman, and NOBODY likes that......But there's a difference between thinking something was ok, and coming from a film buzzing and wanting to see it over and over again. Not much SF that grabs me that way. The last time was Serenity.

I'm not saying The Avengers is like Serenity ... but there is a common element :- D
The Hulk is the best rendition I have ever seen. Banner is even better.
Whedon really gets and understands character interaction.
Yes, and does it all with that JW humour. Great writer. Now I'm having withdrawal symptoms......I'll have to get myself along and see The Avengers.....I need a Joss fix.....

SciFi are showing S3 of Buffy at the moment - possibly the best Buffy season. Everyone's there: Oz, Cordelia, Faith, Angel - everyone knows about Angel - things are still fairly jolly - the Mayor. They've just shown the one where they think Oz is killing people, Buffy thinks back-from-hell Angel is killing people, and it's neither of them.
Good times.

My wife and I are working our way through Buffy again on DVD, just finished season 3 and are half way through season 4.
The Initiative stuff is a bit naff but Spike is hilarious.

Spike is very cool. Who else could they bring in to replace Angel? Anya is also a good Cordy replacement.
Coool..... thanks for the reminder cricket Angel, I shall go and see it, he is indeed a God among men, or at least he makes some great TV/Film.

I've heard nothing but good things about this film. Love the way they set out to make this series.

He's been black since they started the Ultimate comic series.Much meaner.

Didn't get Serenity. But then I never watched Firefly.
Firefly is better than Serenity by a good measure, but it's a TV series, the film is a bit like a rough draft.

I think you obviously get more out of Serenity if you've watched Firefly.
It's just a massive wonderful episode that ties up some important plot points the cancellation left dangling.
"ties up some important plot points the cancellation left dangling. "
It does do that, and you're right that it is better to have watched the series beforehand, I just don't think it works terribly well as a stand alone film, being a fan I loved it though even so.
Coincidentally, Malc is in something on Channel 5 at the moment, (suspect it's CSI.)

I have seen it poll ahead of Star Wars A New Hope in some Best of SciFi Films to be No.1. Whedonites are an awesome force :- D

The prequels and Lucas' meddling with the original masterpieces have ruined The Holy Trilogy. I can't even watch them now.

Castle. Quite fun - I especially like the poker nights where real-life authors hash out the clues of Castle's latest case.
But Castle is no Malc. And definitely no Father Caleb.

That's probably the right way to approach it. I've bought the DVDs with the originals on them. One day I may be able to watch them again.

Not many have, I suspect. Murder-mystery-romance-comedy. Aimed at women. Works for me, but probably not must-see.
A lot of stuff passes me by beth, hence wondering if it was CSI, which seems almost ubiquitous to me.
But hey if you like it that's all that matters.
Castle's a good watch on a Friday night, when you don't want anything too taxing. But no Mal, that's for sure. And Morena/Inara is in Homeland. Nearest to his Serenity/Firefly character was Adam Baldwin's character Casey in the wonderful "Chuck" For those who missed it (Why?) here's a tast of the character -

Castle is heaps of fun, and there are many, many indirect references to Firefly in it.
Adam "Jayne" Baldwin guest starred in an episode in the US just last week, and rumours are that the character will be back again, from time to time.
Great reference to Firefly here:
Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America are being shown on a certain satellite channel today.
