I emailed the Grauniad a couple of weeks ago when it launched the new "improved" Guide with the Saturday paper...the TV and radio listings had been separated (which I liked) but horror of horrors there was no listing for ´óÏó´«Ã½4 Extra! Now, I know there is a lot of, shall we say, filler, on this radio station but I rely upon it to get me to sleep when I come back from a call-out at stupid o'clock. Further, I like to know exactly when the repeats of "At home with the snails" are on so I can tune into the World Service instead.

So, anyway, I emailed the paper and said I was a bit miffed at losing the 4E listings; got no reply, but lo and behold in today's Guide...4 Extra is back.

Sometimes, them faceless beggars in vast organisations do listen.

    Well, very well done you.

But it may be too late for me. I've gone over to the Radio Times, which has it all and is cheaper (I can get the UK edition of TG out here in Brussels, but it costs €4.75 on a Saturday, which is a lot.)

I was a Guardian reader for nearly 50 years, although with a couple of interruptions of a few years. The regular Saturday purchase was my last link. I still like the paper, but it's very thin these days, and The Guide and the prize crossword were my real reasons for buying it lately. And I can get the crossword free online (I think), so I'm afraid they've lost me as a buyer.

Morty, I'm sure it wasn't just me who complained, but I'm pleased nonetheless. I know what you mean about the paper, but I do still like to have the actual thing to read. I'm a crossworder too, and I can't always get to print it out or do it on line so it is good to be able to shove the paper into my bag if I'm heading out for a stint on the road. I can get the RT sometimes but I prefer the paper.

Eilis - sorry if I appeared to dis the snails; we can't all like the same things! As I remind myself each time someone praises Count Arthur Strong.

You may well have your precious Radio 4 Extra, Iz, but as a consequence my copy of this week's Guide has been printed an inch too high, which means the top has been cut off all the pages and I can't see what programmes are on or which day I'm looking at. IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT.

The Radio Times is still going then? I haven't seen it in decades! Reading it didn't survive leaving home.

Radio Times is the only way I know of getting the amount of information I like to have on radio programmes.
Plus it has Alison Graham, who is very nearly always right about everything.
And Jane Anderson is a new hero for what she said about this MB.

Hello, Izzie well done and ta. We did have a little discussion about this when it happened. Morty, eilis and myself iirc. But I don't think any of us did anything about it.

I only get the Guardian on Saturday these days. The Telegraph is so much honester and better written. But the Guide is one of the two reasons I still buy the Saturday one. The other is for reviews of books I know I should read but also know I will never get round to

I used to buy the Radio Times religiously until a few years ago I wouldn't get round to it more and more often and realised I didn't miss it. I look at it in my mother's the odd time but there's so much stuff about television channels I never watch that I don't feel I'm missing anything. Meanwhile the radio information gets more and more squeezed.

My mother says one of my brothers and I used to fight over the RT when it came into the house. It's one of the ways I first acquired my store of triviata.

There was a lot of interesting stuff in the Radio Times at one time, and i found it a good source of trivial information too.

However, it seemed to change around the same time as the introduction of Radio 1 when a massive 'dumbing down' occurred.

Actually, most print journalism seems to have gone through the same process; even the Sun and Mirror, on the occasions when I see them, seem to have been trivialised, something I would not have thought possible. 'Metro' is quite well written by comparison, at least over the handful of editorial pages that precede the advertising!

    Guardian, all is forgiven.

There is a review of a novel by Woody Guthrie (House of Earth), recently discovered and published. I suspect it may not have much literary merit but I shall certainly buy it and read it. And I bet it wasn't reviewed in the Telegraph.

"The radio information gets more and more squeezed"--does it? I hadn't noticed. It nearly always has the complete cast-lists for dramas, etc.

It's only just occurred to me that I will have very few chances to post anything more about Woody on this board. So here is Woody singing one of his very best and in our current circumstances most appropriate songs:

Reggie, I noticed the Woody Guthrie review, and am sore tempted to buy the book; like you I suspect it might not be the best-written book on the shelves but it looks pretty interesting. And yes, I doubt it's been reviewed in the Torygraph.

Leaps, if you let me know which pages you are desperate to read, I'll scan them in and email them to you. Never let it be said that I came between a badger and his radio guide.

I managed to set up a shortcut on my Galaxy for the 4E schedule, but it is not as handy as flicking through the Guide.
