Despite the valiant efforts of many posters and readers to save this wonderful online community, we will more than likely have to face the grim reality that this message board will shortly be closed down.
There exists an online service, run by the British Library, where sites of cultural and other significance can be nominated for archiving in order to preserve a snapshot for the future.
I can think of /no/ /better/ candidate for preservation than this message board; I therefore urge you to make representations on its (and our) behalf for it to be included in the archive.

Oh gosh - I just looked at the site, and although I'd like to nominate it, it looks a bit complicated, asking for URLs and suchlike. Can someone give me an Nidiot's guide? Or can I just type 'like' - or is it 'this'? Or thumbs up?

Agree - good idea. Am currently in the process for work web pages, although I think National Archives are picky about what they'll take, so the may not consider ML of historical/cultural importance.

I would really really really REALLY not like this board to be preserved after it has been closed. In fact, I can't think of anything worse. No no no, it just sends a shiver of inappropriateness down my spine.
Sorry, I know you mean well, but it just sounds awful to me. The board should be a memory, nothing more. The community (which is nothing if not a living thing) will continue on other boards, such as the ones provided by Peet at and smeesue at

Just nominated it v j.
Here is the bit what I wrote -
Started as an adjunct to the radio programme, the board became so much more than just another specialist message board. Boards were added to the main site and given titles such as "The Bull" (the pub in Ambridge) and "The Village Hall". The Bull was an area that anyone could discuss anything that was not related to the Archers programme and became probably the most popular part of the whole board. The Village Hall was the place to go for special interest groups, notably a mental health thread, an Autism thread and closest to my heart, a "Cancer Copers" thread. Many, many people have sought solace and knowledge about various conditions in The Village Hall and the true community spirit of our nation is evident all through these threads. There were also word game threads in "The Bull Upstairs". Many people have commented on site that the boards are a lifeline for them and a major part of their lives.

Sorry Leapers, but you're wrong.

Oh gosh I realise that you feel really strongly about this and I do understand why, but equally I think that this message board is of enough importance to nominate for preservation as an example of an early 21st century virtual community.
As someone has already said, they are quite picky about what they will take though, so it's a long shot really. And, as I said on the other thread, there is already a fairly recent snapshot around somewhere but this would place it on a site that recognised its cultural value. As we all know, once it's out there in the ether it's out there .....
