Why was the thread on the Hilary Mantel article on the Duchess of Cambridge closed.
Is this another example of the royalists supressing free speech if you dare not fawn them?

Perhaps the moderators would like to explain, perhaps pigs might fly.

Possibly the most ridiculous modding I've witnessed, you have to wonder if the mods, bored, perhaps fed up with losing their jobs + the end anyway, can be bothered to make a sensible decision. Or maybe it is another example of making us feel more put on and annoyed about the place that we want to leave anyway.

Not bad,it lasted more than 13 hours..when I posted it I gave it no more than 10mins...............................what you call a 'slow burner'

Copyright issues? There was some extensive quoting going on.

But the whole thread?

Maybe that was it. (copyright)

Am I going to be the last person ever moderated here? What an honour!

I doubt it very much.

There have been many threads on these boards over the years that link to and extensively quote opinion pieces from newspapers.

The OP was modded, which was not negative about the Royals as I recall, but described Hilary Mantel in less than flattering terms.

I got an email today saying one of my posts had been removed - it was written in 2005. Clearly the mods have gone off their rockers.

< the mods have gone off their rockers >
I saw what you did there - though in my recollection mods were never at all keen on rockers (and contrariwise, of course).

Snork!
Fow Pah, remember that if the OP gets modded, the whole thread has always been closed.

Maybe it was starting to get rather nasty. And with a week to go the mods probably just can't be bothered putting up with obnoxious posts.
Maybe it's copyright ,or they thought that some comments on the thread put them in a very actionable position.

From experience I suspect that anything negative you say about the royals, however mild, is pulled.
I also suspect that it is the work of an ardent royalist here who does the catpeeing, rather than the mods.

another example of the royalists supressing free speechÂ
1. Hilary Mantel's piece was a talk entitled "Undressing Anne Boleyn" delivered at the British Museum on the 4th February under the auspices of the London review of Books, and subsequently reproduced in print by them
2. The talk was not about how royal women are vacuous clothes horses [or clothes pegs, depending upon the current fashion in women's body shapes] but about how they are *represented* in portraits, in the press, under the public gaze.
3. Nothing new or shocking there - historians, art and literary critics have been de/constructing images of women inside the frame of their clothing for decades
4. The Mail's response was a stonking example of what Mantel was saying - even unto getting all the factual detail completely the wrong way round. Anyone who has ever scanned the Mail's right hand column of shame with sceptical eye was guffawing mightily, although a little sorry for Mantel.
5. Hope it boosts sales for the LRB -
6. No idea why the thread was closed, but if the OP was as inaccurate as the DM's front page, I should think it was becuase it was libellous.

I have come to the sad conclusion that the poor management of these boards has contributed at least n a small way to their demise.
Emails from them are littered with spelling and punctuation errors and appear to have been written by semi-literate people lacking in any real comprehension of their role to maintain the independence of the ´óÏó´«Ã½.

Shouldn't that be 'confirm for you'?
(And can you indeed convincingly confirm that the mails are full of grammatical faults if yours are too?
It's a puzzler, innit?)

I think you can confirm to someone as well, can you not?

well a swift google reveals that this construction is indeed in use in some places but it still sounds odd to me. 'sProbably American...
Ooh, is that why you're a fat kid fat kid? Are you hamburger fed? (Will I get modded for being racist about US citizens now?)

I was a fat kid once until I discovered the magic of moving about and not eating as much.
But part of me still feels like one deep down a bit.
