Hornby.
Although a pedant might observe that between 1964 and 1972 they were merged into:
Tri-ang Hornby

Tri-ang Hornby is what I remember too.
With slightly evil bits used to join lengths of track together that slit yer fingertips if you weren't careful.

So did plastic or metal win? I guess it would have been plastic.
Meccano is always the answer, Vint.
What was the question again ?

Meccano is always the answer, Indeed, Boney. I daresay you got the butler to do all the fiddly assembly work whilst you rode round the estate on your 10" gauge Basset-Lowke steam loco.
What Torquil says.

Indeed, Giles did all the assembly and then I would kick the monstrosity into oblivion - and sometimes I would even kick the Meccano to bits too.
In later years, I took using an oxy-acetylene torch on his creations.
I always wanted to be be Nigel the Destroyer when I grew up - but someone beat me to it.
