Oh well make the most of tonight's programme as GW will not be returning until the end of MARCH next year, apart from Christmas programme. 4 months without it........... glad I've taped most of this series so I can watch again thru' the bleak winter months.

Think Monty is exhausted and wants more time with his family and to sort his new farm out. Can't blame him for that - he does give everything his all. Looking forward to reading his new book (out on Monday). Already on my Christmas list.

Thanks to the whole GW team and everyone behind the scenes for another brilliant series. Despite all the criticisms I'm sure there are far more people who are very, very happy with the programme. It is still the best gardening programme on tv. Looking forward to the Spring and the return of GW.

Thanks Poly. From memory, they started at the end of Feb this year, didn't they? Perhaps they have seen the long range forecast and decided it might be too cold! It will definitely seem like spring when they return. I hope they use the winter break to think of new ways of taking GW forward so that next year is even more inspiring.

Yes, you are quite right Lord Steve, they have started the new gardening year at the end of February for the last 2 years, ever since Monty took over (apart from his first year when it was April, I believe). I think before then it was always April before they began a new series. Typical of Monty to want to get started early, always keen. Really when you consider this, we do get a lot more of GW than before. I'm sure it carries on later in the year than before and, of course, there were the 1 hour programmes we had for 5 weeks in May and the summer specials, along with the Christmas Special. We had none of this in the days of Mr Titchmarsh. Perhaps this is the reason they do run out of ideas at times. I think we are very lucky. Well done GW.

As far as i recall the programme has regularly started in late feb/early march since Alan's days at Barleywood. It was only the first year the show was at berryfields that it didnt start until April (i guess because they had loads of stuff to sort out there first).

Reading that GW will not start until late march is disapointing to say the least. The 2005 series hasnt been over a week and already i am already missing it (yes I am THAT sad). Most dedicated gardeners dont wait to start gardening until the end of march so why should the GW team?

If the only reason for it starting so late is that Monty is too busy to start presenting until then, then this is a poor excuse indeed. cant one of the other presenters front the show until monty is ready to start again/ It is not as if Berryfields is Montys own garden is it? (if so it would be fair enough).

Perhaps the real reason is ´óÏó´«Ã½ cutbacks. But then that would be sooo cynical of me wouldnt it?

I remember the presenters swapping Christmas presents last year - was it a christmas special or did they carry on later last year?

It was a Christmas special, raining hard while they rearranged the planting in the courtyard. A pile of compost, a double watering can and something for Rachel's kids, if I remember correctly!

GW with GH always ended around now but then we'd get a 6 week special such as Paradise Gardens or the Kitchen Garden. It also wenty right through the summer with no break for specials as we have now that it's at Berryfields. When AT was in charge it also carried through the summer with the other presenters taking over when AT was away.

We should be getting Gardener of the Year soon and I'm looking forward to that. I've only seen bits of DG's design show as we are out on Friday evenings. What I have seen doesn't fill me with an urgent desire to fish through the videos and see the rest in any hurry.

Didn't get any HOUR long programmes though like we had for 5 weeks this May and the summer specials are an hour long as well. I like the specials - I think they make interesting viewing.

I like the specials too but it does mean we miss out on several weeks of "what's hot to do/see/plant" in the garden for that period. They're made a year in advance so don't have to be scheduled as GW replacements. I'm greedy enough to want them as a bonus extra.

Yes, know what you mean. I'd like it to carry on thru' summer holidays as well and also have the summer specials (I'm greedy too smiley - smiley ) - they would be nice now or especially the 2 bleak months of January and February. Thinking about it I suppose it's easier for them to go off for several weeks holiday as Monty, Joe and Sarah all have children of school age and it would be a nightmare trying to sort out who would do what when.

Sorry but I don't share your lamentations about Gardeners' World: it USED to be compulsive viewing for me but no more.

The mix of presenters is not right though I admire the 2 ladies much more than Joe and Monty. The latter is way too dismissive of all others' opinions - especially the females - and is far too strident in his views, whcih incidentally i have challenged him over but got rubbished by him as a reply. I rest my case

Geoff Hamilton never has, nor ever will be replaced and so GW is out to seed with me I fear....
