I'm already starting to get excited and plan for the GW chilli trial next spring. When I spent some time in Italy, an amateur chilli grower there timed his chilli seed sowing to the phases of the moon. He always got good results with this method. Trouble is I can't remember if it was best to sow the seeds on a full or new moon. Anyone else heard of anything similar to this in terms of chilli seed sowing ?

There are two ways of following moon phases. The simplest is sowing or planting during a waxing moon for above ground development - flowers, fruits, most veggies - and during a waning moon for root development - root veggies, transplants, cuttings.

The more complicated way is called Biodynamics and correlates the relative position of the moon in the sky - ascending or descending - with the astrological calendar. It is fiendishly complicated but it is also possible to buy books or calendars every year. This system defines the best days for sowing, planting, harvesting, dividing, taking cuttings of plants etc and then these are divided into flowers, fruits, leaf crops and roots. There are also two days per month when the moon's orbital position relative to the earth is unfavourable and no gardening should be done at all.

Last year I followed the waxing and waning system as much as I could and had a good year. This year, I chanced upon a calendar and followed it at the beginning of the gardening year up until June when I mislaid it for a while. What I like about this system is that it concentrates the mind. When I go out to sow or plant or prune or weed, that's what I do, very efficiently. Normally, I would have gone out to do one job, spotted something else and ended up faffing with something completely different and dreaming and distracted and getting half as much done. I've also had almost 100% seed germination using this method except with the carrots which didn't like the drought.
