i dig mine up & store them in vermiculite.
if you think your garden is quite sheltered you could put a thick mulch on top & take your chances.
as for the cuttings can't help you sorry

I don't know anything about Dahlias, but I was very inspired by Gardener's Worlds' Dahlia trial this summer. I am determined to grow them next year to brighten the garden. Do they need alot of looking after? Is is best to grow from seed or tubers? Any advice gratefully received! Thanks!

Personally i like to grow mine from tubers and then take cuttings, from my personal experience tubers tend to grow stronger where as the seeds tended to look less healthy and weak.

Thanks for the reply, i have put them in the greenhouse and will get some covering over them.

The cuttings will have to be trial and error i think this year hopfully they will last and then i will have learned something new.

If your part of Wales is anything like mine W3, it is freezing the brass monkey's tears smiley - yikes and if your greenhouse is unheated, you will need an awful lot of thermal insulation to protect your dahlia tubers. I take it the cuttings are off tuberous rooted type and in which case, they should have produced nice little tubers by now and stored like the big ones.

Leaving them in the ground to over-winter may be OK some years when the weather is mild but a few days of penetrating frost or a period of cold wet weather will soon sort them out.
