I have some balcony plant pots that have been looking a bit bare and sad the last few months and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some plants that would give a bit of colour? The balcony is west facing and so only gets a bit of sun late in the day.

    My garden too faces west.

Phormium's are great for all year round interest. I have two, one of which I have had in a medium sized pot for about 18 months (Maouri queen) which is doing fine. I'm not sure how practical it would be for you, but you could try a winter flowering clematis as these stay evergreen all year round and from memory don't require pruning. I have one growing in a small brick raised bed, but my neighbour has the same one growing in a fairly large pot.

Hopefully Alan's programme tonight might give you (and me) some ideas.

    Hope this helps
