It was great to see Alan on the tele again in the garden with a brand new tv series and for those who think its a rerun of HTBAG because the garden featured comes from that series can thnk again because it has taken into account the changes in our climate brought on by global warming.
It was so much better than GW which I think quite frankly is on another planet than most of us planting things like conifer gardens and making huge displays in pots - fine for those who have plenty to spend on large plants - what has happened to growing plants from seeds and cuttings?

Oh how I agree with you Caggsley! I'd almost forgotten how it's not so much the techicalities but how the presenter tells you what to do, with a little humour added. I've gone off gardening over the last couple of years but having watched the first 2 of this new series I'm inspired and ready to get started again!

I couldn't agree more. I gave up watching G.W.some months ago,as it was so lacking in variety. A.T. is a joy to watch and listen to. His enthusiasm and practical approach to whatever he is doing is very infectious. Let's have more of him. I think it's because AT enthuses about gardening AND admits to his own failings. I would like to see Chris Beardshaw take over from Monty. Anyone else agree?

Wonderful to hear others voicing my thoughts. I have been turned off GW. I did hang in there when Alan left to give Monty and the others a chance but they don't seem to be on the same level as me. Alan always hit the right note and I so enjoyed watching all his gardening TV coverage. Alan, if you ever see this - if you feel the need to help out a novice gardener who is full of desire to improve an established garden but doesn't know where to start - come hither. If not, then, ´óÏó´«Ã½, please bring him back as much as possible.

Yes,I also think Chris Beardshaw would be good as the G.W. presenter and Carol Klein is another person for that job. they both have great enthusisam for all types of gardening. I think it's because AT enthuses about gardening AND admits to his own failings. I would like to see Chris Beardshaw take over from Monty. Anyone else agree?

Three Points to make about above message:-

    1) Can't say that Monty isn't enthusistic about Gardening have you been watching and reading the same material as everyone else?

    2) Since when has Monty not admitted to having some failures at Berryfields or elsewhere? I think his problem with Brassicas and Sweet Peas is well documented by his own hand!

    3) Like CB but don't want a change of presenters.

In reply to some of those who refer to HTBG and Gardeners Year as being their perfect horticultural programming that is fine and I also enjoy tuning in.

Gardeners World is for those amateur gardeners with perhaps more experience or seeking a little more depth and breadth than is offered by Alan Titchmarsh who is aiming at the novice.

I personally would hate to see Monty Don explaining to me how and when to cut grass and therefore do not want to see Gardeners World content (nor presenter) changed.

PS I think that I could show sufficent enthusism for anything that made me a £10,000,000 fortune (Sunday Times Rich List 2005)

Let's face it. Alan is an appealing presenter. His easy, relaxed, rounded and jocular manner makes the subject infectious. He takes away the mystery and makes many believe gardening is something they really could do. Great! I watch GW with Monty, (recorded now so I whizz through the boring bits) but his style is angular and stilted by comparison. He trudges through the material as he does the borders in his boots. It all seems to be so much hard work.

I more or less agree with everyone's comments so far, except to say (for me) there's room for both AT & GW on TV.

Let's remember GW & AT fulfil very different rolls.

I think Chris Beardshaw has a similar 'bedside manner' to Alan Titchmarsh. Easy on the eye, easy on the ear, enthusiasm passed effortlessly from screen to viewer. He interacts easily with the public and is very relaxed. A good combination.

But I don't see him as presenting GW in the near future as the result of his sudden departure last year. I suspect a lot of damage was done to his relationship with the ´óÏó´«Ã½, which is a shame as he would make the ideal front man.

Sorry - missed the Rich List. I presume AT is on it? (Or Monty?)

I feel just the same. The programme is great, and makes me feel enthusiastic about tackling my new garden, roll on the warmer weather though! This programme has a different fell about it to any other gardening programme - could it just be the charisma of Mr. T?

Alan just has a way of explaining things! I am currently watching HTBG on UK Gardens for probably the third time and learn something new every time! I enjoy GW but agree about the conifer gardens and large plants, I enjoy watching Monty, and also think Joe Swift is a good presenter. To be honest I don't really mind who presents as long as the content is good!

Absolutely not. I'd prefer they all got their own programmes on other chanels and GW was 100% Monty or (ho ho) the full Monty.

couldn't agree more, been in love with him since Beachfield gardens , from Scotland , years ago. I was really pleased when he got G.W.
His book Fork to Fork is all about veg and a joy to read.
Have you noticed how all the T.V. gardens begin with the letter B.
Beachfield Gardens ,Barnsdale, Barley Wood and Berryfields?
    Is it an omen?

After thouroughly enjoying 'The Gardeners Year' I am starting to wonder if the best thing all round would be to either persude Alan to come back to GW OR to replace GW with an expanded version of 'The Gardeners Year', presented by Alan.

The 'Gardeners Year' was so refreshing it made me realise exactly what is wrong with GW at the moment (much as i like MOST of the presenters and Berryfields).

Go for it. If Monty leaves GW they'll need a new front man. Cant think of anyone better for the job!
