    Hello everyone
I'm 16 and a really keen horticulturist. I have won the Princess Diana memorial award for my horticulture commitment, i have worked in a local nursery, i sell plants and hanging baskets myself and i write a gardening article for a local magazine. I am also thinking about doing some gardening talks on an evening at my high school. Monty Don is my main inspiration and i absolutely idilise him! Has anyone get any ideas/info on how i can get to where Monty is now or how i could get to contact him? Please help!!!

    Hi GFK
Sounds like you are well on your way already. There are some who might think your choice of idol is arguable,as AT seems to be the local god.As far as I am concerned I think you learn something from everybody. If you wanted to write to Monty himself just send a letter c/o The ´óÏó´«Ã½,he should get it.Put an s.a.e in and he might reply himself.
You are young enough to spend a lot of time to learn about all aspects of hortculture,I would suggest to spend some of it at college. I spent 5 years at college getting qualifications. There is a huge selection of courses available just choose one and then go as far as you want.
Keep in touch here with your progress.
Good luck in what you do.
    regards
    lance

Hi like you I passionate about hortriculture, young and hope to have a career in hortricutral journalism. Id agree with the previous post about contacting Monty don, and gaining a qualification, I'm in the final year of my degree and have had a few bits published, Id say keep on with the writing most of the gardeners on telly got in to from writing(Alan Titchmarsh,Monty Don,Geoff Hamilton, Sarah Raven, Carol Klein) so its seems to be the best route in some people are just get lucky. I'm sure whatever route your career takes you will rise to the top and be very happy.

Well gfk, I'd say you are already going the right way about it. Why don't you contact all the gardening/horticulture mags & journals & suggest writing articles from the point of view of a young horticulturalist. I would hope they would be interested & you have got existing work you can show them. Certainly get qualifications ( although I am not aware of MD having any.) I would try contacting MD at The Observer where he has a weekly column in the magazine - more likely to get to him than the beeb I would think.

Spread your net as wide as you can because I think that much of this sort of thing is down to a bit of luck & being in the right place at the right time. All the best!
