This show is really enjoyable, but I would love if she wore nicer clothes and had decent hair and makeup.
Why does she look like this?
Surely you are talking about Sarah Raven Poor Christine - she has really taken a 'bashing' on these boards! What/who is everyone going to 'bash' when the programme finishes?
Eh, I think she's the one with the short hair, slightly eccentric. I watched the show and thought 'Ohmigod'. Her look is not very feminine. I am sure she is a lovely person and all......
I watched the show and thought 'Ohmigod, hair and makeup!' She needs a stylist too. The show is very good though.
The show is interesting but not very informative. What you should be thinking is that if she is on the TV it cuts the Gardeners year with AT short to half an hour.
Don't be naive Turnipgreen. Not having Christine wouldn't get us an extra 30 mins of AT, though I can quite see why you would live in hope. I'd love and extra 30 mins too.
As for Christine, it is clear from what I have seen of these programmes she has been a plant nerd since a very early age and hair and make-up are the last thing to concern someone like her. What she likes is plants, plants, plants and a pair of comfy boots to garden in.
I record both progs as we are out on Friday pms (at dance classes, but not very strictly). I can watch the AT ones over and over. I have to watch the Christine ones in 5 minute sections. I can't cope with more than that at once but neither can I cope with possibly missing something interesting or relevant to me. Still hoping.

Lottie Lady, as one who has been as guilty (if not more) than most for 'Christine bashing' on these boards, I think the answer to your question is probably no-one. I can say for certain that I personally have never been critical of any presenter in the past. In fact, (for the record) I can say that Sarah Raven is one of my favourites.
As I've already made my views clear about Christine & her series, I won't elaborate further.
One episode to go....thank goodness!!!

Well Mr Knapper I think this is a clear cut case of mistaken identity - I dont recall being guilty of 'bashing' Christine at all- let alone more than anyone else ...
this was my original post:- quote
I like the way this programme is made, we are seeing Christine as she really is (and what it is like to be a self employed person ) doing a job that she loves, so her lawn isn't perfect or her lawnmower - how many of us have perfection in what we do?
It's about a real person and her real garden - and I think it makes a refreshing change .
Good on ya Christine!....unquote
I think I was then told about a smoking lawnmower and made a comment of How NOT to be a Gardener then as I missed that on the show...
Not really 'bashing is it David!
Lottie Lady
Oh dear! I'm afraid you have totally misread my message. My words "as one who has been as guilty (if not more) than most of 'Christine bashing ‘on these boards!" were intended to mean ME not YOU, please re-read in that context.
Although I reserve my right to comment both critically & complimentary (that after all is the purpose of this board) on TV gardening programmes, you will find it extremely unlikely that I will be rude to any fellow members.
Very sorry if you have felt offended...friends?
Not offended at all David - just thought you mixed me up with someone else!
Lottie Lady, glad that's cleared up then.
Btw, Christine had a slot on this morning's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Breakfast programme; I'm pleased to say that (although the interview only lasted a couple of minutes) she did manage to keep the lid on her usual effervescence.
This show is really enjoyable, but I would love if she wore nicer clothes and had decent hair and makeup.
Ìý
And why should she have to wear makeup ????
She is after all gardening - getting hot and sweaty etc etc.
I think it is very shallow that you think to be a good presenter you have to look nice....
To be fair, I'm inclined to think that references to Christine's need to wear makeup and pay more attention to her hair etc, are because her unkempt appearance is a tad off-putting for the small screen.
This is an observation, not a criticism!

So we want enthusiasm, good-looks and feminine hair and make-up. Who better to fulfil all this than newly created celebrity Chantelle! The fact that she knows nothing much about gardening should be of no hindrance - it didn't stop Charlie Dimmock!
Well! Chantelle can certainly weed my onion patch anytime.

doesn't matter what she looks like - I bet half of us look a mess when we are digging, planting onions, pulling up weeds etc, but the programmes were terrible, every one looked the same. I think she's better off on radio. Joy

Hi Rhoda! Great idea! I'd love to see Chantelle laughing and shrieking and trying to get sticks and leaves and small animals unstuck from those horrid hair extensions!

Well said, F-O-F. I think Christine is brilliant. We are not all looking for sex symbols on these gardening programmes. She inspires me with her enthusiasm and keeps me highly amused with her eccentricity. Good on you Christine!
Jump up and down with enthusiasm or frustration?

With enthusiasm or frustration? There is no way the US Garden show presenters would look so uncared for. I saw Charlie Dimmock about 1 foot away at Chelsea in May. She was presenting a link with Jennie Bond. At least they wore some foundation!! I mean come on - hair and makeup people! I would love to see her on Trinny and Susanna. They would so beat up on her for her unfeminine look.
I've met Charlie Dimmock on several occasions, I must confess to finding her femininity quite outstanding!
Btw, her speciality subject is aquatics; a subject she remarkably knowledgeable about.
"She is after all gardening - getting hot and sweaty etc etc."
Did I miss smething??
I have found the programme brill as I am studying horticulture perhaps Christines knowledge is above some peoples perception of gardening. I think she just oozes inspiration and when listened to attentively, fab info!

I think you have missed the point of the show.
It's about Christine's love of gardening and life without all the trappings of material things such as clothes and make-up.
She has found something much more important in life - the beauty of a garden or landscape, the treasured friendship of neighbours. How many of us wish we had just a portion of what she's got?

I think you all need to get your boots on and go and do some shallow digging in your own gardens, rather than on these boards....
Reg to have his own show!!
HEAR HEAR!!!! I am sorry but I don't garden in my Sunday Best, make up just so, and after I have just had my hair done. Get a grip you people. Yes she was on TV but she was also portraying the very knowledgeable lady next door that I am sure we would all like to know. I know I would.
Keep up the good work Christine.

Sorry got the orriginal the wrong way round
Sorry but I think you are critizing Christines programme for no relevant reasons. She has a wonderful personality and knows a life times knowledge of real gardening expertise. She is not full of her own importance but cheerful to all she meets and very natural on screen. I wish she were my neighbour and i feel as though I have made a new friend, lets have more of Christine on G.W. in the future on even better her own series again.

Don't worry - I'm sure David Knapper will have recorded it !!!
Why do you think Christine has to be lacquered and glossed before you feel happy with her look?
I found nothing wrong with her. She has a natural warmth that came thru and shone in her face when she spoke of her garden and Mother Nature
I think your comments were quite rude really and not necessary
I agree with all you say Christine is something else -
Well we could have someone like Victoria Beckham doing the garden, she wears make-up and has nice hair. Cant see much gardening getting done though. All that muck under her nice polished nails! I enjoyed watching Christine's Garden, she loves what she does and that's what counts.

I don't doubt that she does love what she does - but most of the contributors to these pages will enjoy their gardens every bit as much. I think what we are looking for is some indication of just what this lady has that could possibly make her daily diary interesting to the masses. I agreed with one contributor who suggested that she would have taken to it more had it been on daytime TV, and was not posing in any way as a gardening programme. Nice woman no doubt, nice neighbours, yappy dog - what else?
