    Hi,
This is probably going to be a bit vague but thanks to anyone who can help.
We watched 'The Gardener's Year' on Friday and there was an amazing plant in it. They showed a border in flower (not the same border that Alan Titchmarsh was working on with the dahlias) and there was a plant that had very fine leaves, almost like soft needles and the flowers were all different, bright colours, really beautiful. We thought they said it was japanese anemones, but looking on Google, this was not what they were. Does anyone have the foggiest of what I'm on about??!! Thanks! smiley - smiley

    Hi

He mentioned Japanese anemones, echinacea, fennel and lychnis in that section - and gathered seed from Aquilegia Nora Barlow.

    Hope that helps...

    Hi Margi,
Thanks for your message, you were paying closer attention than me! Had a look on Google at each plant, unfortunately the one I'm looking for that they showed on screen is none of them (although it appeared in the same section you mentioned), perhaps they didn't say what it was at all... a shame though, such a beautiful plant!

    Hi

Can you tell me a bit more? I can also remember there being verbena bonariensis and a gladiolus with drooping bell-like flowers (papilio, I think) and lots of grasses. Can you describe where on the border it was? I don't remember anything multi-coloured but if you could remember any more I can have another think...

    Margi x

Cosmos was the one that I was thinking of Beejay - thanks - I;ve been wracking my brains trying to think of the name of it. Now I've looked it up in my RHS Plant Encyclopedia it says Cosmos "Sensation" moderately fast-growing, bushy, erect annual. Has feathery, mid-green leaves (very frondy looking) and daisy-like flowerheads to 10cm wide in shades of red, pink or white from early summer to early autumn. Height 90cm Spread 60cm. They were definitely cosomos in one of the boarders. They also come in different colours including yellow "Cosmos Bright Lights Series" and "Sunny Gold" and "Sunny red". Actually I seem to think they come in chocolate as well.

YES! I think that must be it... I was trying to explain further to Margi last night that the leaves were quite like fennel, so thought that maybe the fennel and japanese anemones were planted together, but my message never made it to the board as I must have gone past closing time!
I have looked on the internet for pictures of cosmos sensation and it looks very much like it, so I assume it's that. The only thing is, to get different coloured flowers all over it, would I have to plant different plants, or does it produce them from one plant? Probably a bit of a silly question, but you never know! Thanks to everyone for this... oh, and you're right about there being a chocolate cosmos too, we had one years ago, it even smells of chocolate, my kind of plant. smiley - smiley
