I have just moved into a new cottage with magnificent clematis. Do I prune them now or leave until later - if so when????

Hi Cottagelover! The thing with clematis is that they come in three different pruning groups. It really would help if you could post a picture. However, when you say "maginificent" clematis do you mean one that's huge, perhaps growing up the cottage (sounds gorgeous by the way)? Is it an evergreen, ie, green through the winter? And is there any chance you can post a picture of the flowers so we can have a go at identifying it? From what you've said I've got the idea of a montana in my mind which doesn't actually need pruning but can be pruned back quite a bit after flowering. Hope this helps but get back if you can give more information.
