Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the current offerings on the shelves.

Gardeners World and The Garden I think are fantastic but fell out of love recently with Amateur Gardening and moved over to Garden News for my weekly read.

I can't say I am interested in the current fad of putting recipes into Gardening Magazines.

Sorry if this discussion is slightly off board but thought as its media related might be relevant.

I bought a copy of Gardens Illustrated yesterday as i had never read it before. It seems to fill a gap between GW magazine and The Garden, both of which i get regularly- i found it quite interesting and will probably get it again. I also look out for the Woman's Weekly Gardening 'Specials' they do from time to time, which always seem to have lots of lovely gardens in them.
I must admit to doing a double-take when the celebrity chefs started appearing in GW magazine. I guess it's all part of the increasing fashion for growing your own. Still, it's not a bad bandwagon to be on, i guess.

    I liked gardenlife too.
I have gardeners world and amateur gardening delivered and often buy garden answers.
Not too keen on any at the moment as a lot of the articles are about veg!!
    Don't like the recipes either

I like the veg garden one - name eludes me at the moment, as well as GW. GW seems to strike a nice balance of small and large scale projects and interests, and things for all budgets and abilities. Some of the others seem a bit, well, posh to me. Part of me quite enjoys looking at other people's lives and gardens in the 'posher' mags, and part of me just gets angry, which is no good for the stress levels. I tend to read them every 6 months at the dentist's (get there early) and then at least you haven't had to pay for them as well!

I am actually up to date on my GW mag - also whizz through the recipies and catching up on The Garden. I like the fact they put the botanical names in more. I enjoyed the creativity of Gardenlife and thought i had not seen it for a bit, a shame, but I guessed it was struggling and it is a tough market to be in. Occasionally buy a weekly if it entices me on the front, but don't have time to read any more than that. hifi

I like Gardening Which (tho' you have to sign up for it) as it is very practical & has no adverts. The Garden comes anyway & I enjoy bits & pieces. Otherwise I would recommend Kitchen Garden for fruit & veg (& hens!). The others I look at from time to time but I'm not bothered.

I only really read Amateur Gardening. Quick and simple, not too indepth. I suppose that's where the amateur bit comes in. My grandmotherinlaw (is that a proper name)gives me her GW mags when she's finished with them, so long as I help in the garden which I love to do and take her shopping smiley - laugh

I've always bought GW but, for me, there seems to be more and more advertisements in it. Also, it amazes me how much 'junk confetti' falls out every month!

I have given up with Garden Answers, for me its become very basic and almost comic like. I did an Ipomea Seed Trial for them last year as I was a subscriber, they managed to send the seeds out to everybody exactly a month later than the recomended sowing time. So that started well. smiley - sadface
Still waiting for them to print the results.

I am A GW subscriber too and enjoy the comps, but to be honest the best for me is Gardening Which. its very though and they do lost of comparisons on lots of products, plants and "too good to be true" type stuff. Like the giant strawberry.

Their most recent trial was peat based and peat free compost.. very revealing and surprising..! smiley - yikes

Is Kitchen Garden still as good now that it has changed hands (January?) I enjoyed it - found it very inspiring - but my overseas subscription was a bit pricey so I didn't renew. I heard afterwards that it had been zizzed up (aarrggh!) hence the question.

I get most of the garden mags (not GYO) my favorite is The English Garden, its not always about posh gardens, its got lots of stuff to read and lots on plants etc. It usually features about 5 private gardens so has loads of photos for nosey gardeners like me...

I like GW, AG gets a bit the same year in year out, but I suppose thats like gardening.
I don't like the recepies either, don't particularly like the veg - they have several mags of their own...I just want ones with flowers and gardens thankyou.

I have a subscription to Garden Answers which my young man buys every year for me. I think it's aimed at the slightly more er basic level gardener but has nice pics and they are very helpful if you ring/email them with a problem. My local gardening club has a 'free old mags' selection which I normally end up staggering away with. This way I get back issues of practically every gardening mag there is although generally they are 5+ years old.

I get Amateur Gardening and GW magazine each week/month. Those seem to suit the best and are 'pitched' at the right level for me. I find some like The Garden and Gardens Illustrated too 'upmarket' for my taste. I used to get Garden Answers, but gave it up because i felt it was a bit too 'designerish'. I recently got a copy of GA for holiday reading and found it far more simplistic (and intelligence insulting) than it was the last time i read it, so would not buy it again.

As for some of the others mentioned I have never read any of them so cannot comment.

garden life went under due to dwindling circulation. This was blamed on the general downturn in garden retailing.

Lets hope things pick up soon.

I have been taking Garden News for years. It is a weekly, and is definitely a paper for gardeners. Covers everything, and as it is weekly it is right up to date.

Sometimes think the glossy magazines find the pictures first, then write the articles around them!

I have GW on order at the British supermarket. It's too expensive on subscription to Belgium and they never include the goodies and I do now have to trek 50kms each way once amonth but I also get my daughter's order for WITCH magazine and ginger biscuits and creamed horse-radish for me and our Belgian neighbours.

I get The Garden each month which I enjoy very much. Then I just read anything someone passes on and I even, occasionally, buy one of the local mags in French. Mon Jardin & ma maison is good and so is Les Amis du Jardin - for anyone else over here that's interested. I've just arranged for my garden group to pay an April visit to the garden in Zelzate featured in the March issue of MJ&MM.

I rather like the recipes in GW. Nothing wrong with having one or two new ideas for serving up your veg and maybe thus inspiring more people to grow some. Wouldn't want to see this feature any bigger or start to take over though.

Has anyone tried Hortus? You have to get it by post, I don't think any of the shops sell it. It's an expensive one so only worth it you really really want it (or have pots of money) but I do relish it sometimes. I think I'll switch to buying separate back copies though. It's mainly long articles, with a few black and white, very fine illustrations (wood-cuts and so on) and it's aimed at the keen gardener. It's not very practical though - they have a website ( I think) and it's worth checking out if you like fairly highbrow stuff.

I also love The Garden, and Gardens Illustrated sometimes. I find the others too basic - it's not that I'm an expert, I just have so many books that it seems silly to buy the same information again.
