I was sneakily reading a (short) article in a gardening magazine in the supermarket this morning which I was too mean to buy, and it was Monty's final column for them. He said he was resigning to spend more time with his garden, which seems a fair thing to want to do. However, what foxed me was this: he said he had just signed up for 2 years of recording. Now is that a 2 year stint on GW, do you think, or a new programme? Much though I love GW, I would LOVE to think it might be some new veggie, eco or other such thing. I think Monty has a lot more to offer on telly, considering his columns in the Obersver. Speaking of which, isn't it odd that the tone of those is so very, very different from what he says in GW? I know it's a script, and perhaps there's an element of house-style, but it sounds like a very watered-down version. It's like his Weekend Gardener book, compared with all his others.

I think someone on the Boards said that he's doing a programme about gardens around the world. Of course that means he gets to visit them - poor chap!!!

Oh. Ah well, he's always nice to look at I suppose (and intellectually interesting, of course...), but it wouldn't be what I was hoping for.
    Thanks

I too think he must be referring to Around the World in 80 Gardens that's likely to take a couple of years to complete and he's still continuing with GW for some while at least. Yes, really envious of him getting the chance to travel the world seeing all those beautiful gardens, but apparently he hates travelling and would rather be at home in his own garden any day!! I also love reading his weekly column in the Observer - that's where you find out what he's really like.

Personaly I'd rather he stuck to GW and writing for Amateur Gardening (yes thats what you were looking at sneakily). Someone else could do 'Around the World in 80 Gardens', it doesnt have to be ower Monty. Why not pack someone like Joe Swift on it for a while and give GW veiwers a break from him?

I can predict what will happen: Monty will do the new show, realise he's doing too much TV and not enough gardening and decide to give up GW, leaving the programe (and us) right up the proverbial creek.

Seems to me that more and more programes are being fronted by an increasingly smaller group of presenters. When was the last time we saw any truly 'fresh blood' amoungst TV gardening presenters? (apart from Christine Walkden, but she doesnt really count). New programmes could be given to some new faces and really kick start someones career.

I have certainly read about the programme documenting the progress of his rehabilitating drug addict gardeners in Herefordshire. It is due on the box later this year. Hadn't heard about the other one.

I've a better idea....... pack young Beardshaw off on the 80 gardens jaunt in a hot air balloon. That should take at least a couple of years and get more than a few ardent lady admirers weeping into their trugs instead of regaling us with their raunchy dreams........... smiley - whistle

Hi Slugger. I think it can be summarised as 'a bit busy', and the boards kept spitting me out when they changed. That's why I am now SarahBert. Have also had major career rethink, still education, different branch ultimately. The summer holiday put me back in touch with things I'd kept buried for years - old friends and a different life and way of thinking, and suddenly things slotted into place. Pity it takes 'til nearly 45 for it to happen! This probably sounds gobbledegook, but I've been sorting my head out - spring cleaning! The house has had it too, so if the weather bucks up, garden is next priority for further work. Hope you are well. Glad to see you are still around.
