I've just seen my first butterfly of the season: a Red Admiral in mid-Essex. Anyone else seen anything that weird?

Oh I am so jealous, I have been sitting in front of my south facing patio door hoping to see my first sighting of the year. Although it is freezing cold with an east wind, the sun is very hot here in London.

I was looking around my garden looking at what was starting to emerge when zap, its flies right around me. It's moments like that you NEED a camera. The poor thing will be in for a shock when it starts snowing!

Indeed, out of the wind today was rather warm. I was tempted to go live in the greenhouse (+17c) - if it were not for the plants crammed inside (including some healthy spider plants which I did NOT expect to survive in the unheated greenhouse)

I saw a Tortoiseshell in Buckinghamshire in January - flying free rather than in a shed!!! You can see these two flying in England virtually any time - the over wintering ones can wake up for very slight weather improvements and either peg out or go back to kip for a bit longer.

If you drive through wooded areas at night, you should have a rasonable chance of seeing small moths winging every night of the year excepting very bad weather and even then - the slightest let up and out they come!

This is the most exciting time for me in the garden when the butterflies. bees, moths all come out of hibernation. There are three of us in a group and we are in competition with each other as to who will see the first butterfly of the year. It’s my turn to win so am a prisoner in my own home waiting to see my first sighting. Fingers crossed, mobile charged, camera at the ready hoping I can capture it on film. I am a determined woman!! smiley - biggrin

I was at the Ireland v Italy rugby match on Feb 4th and during the game a bumble bee bobbed along the heads of the supporters on the south terrace.

Come to the Isle of Wight, bumblebees, butterflies, ladybirds etc all year round. Who's the lucky one?

Bumble Bees are ex machina in regard to first sightings 'cos they are exoergic - make their own heat - so can come out whenever they feel like it really.

I reckon the year is definately on the up when I see the first Brimstone butterfly.
