I think you're absolutely right to think about trees - get some height in and then everything else will start to feel right. All of the trees below are suitable for smaller gardens and have more than one season of interest. In fact if you plant one of each you'll have something of interest in the tree department all year round. My choices would be:

    1. Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis'. Pretty pink flowers from November to March, light leaf canopy and yellow leaves in autumn.
    2. Sorbus 'Joseph Rock'. White flowers in spring, but most importantly yellow berries against bright red leaves in autumn - stunning in a good year
    3. Sorbus vilmorinii - deep pink berries in autumn
    4. Prunus cerasifera var. atropurpurea . Dark purple leaves, pale pinky purple flowers in Feb/Mar
    5. Malus 'John Downie'. Pink flowers in spring, masses of red/yellow crab apples in autumn
    6. Acer 'Osakazuki' (if you've got acid or neutral soil). Light green deeply divided leaves in summer, turn a glorious orange/yellow in autumn.
    7. Betula jacquemontii - the whitest bark imaginable on a silver birch. Plant at the very end of the garden - it will get you down there on the coldest of days.

    Good luck

None of these will get too big.
