Please could Monty Don be a bit less breathless and frenetic in this programme. He always seems to be rushing about and gabbling his script. Gardening is often a slow, reflective and patient process, which is its great joy in this modern world. He seems to be infecting everyone else on the programme with this busy, busy style. Alan Titchmarsh and the much loved and lamented Geoff Hamilton seemed to understand that most of us are not in a mad panic to have the biggest, the best or the fastest growing marrow, chilli or dahlia in the west! Please stop spoiling what used to be my favourite programme of the week. We are already enthusiasts,Monty, we don't need geeing up, just information and some ideas.

I agree about all this breathless, gasping, moving about, theatrical, cat-on-a-hot-griddle frenetic stuff done in fast segments....
....let us experience the action that is taking place and the passion that goes with it...
....the production atmosphere and tempo is like Eastenders.....( did I say that?)...Ive gone too far!!

Glad it's not just mesmiley - biggrin

Trouble is Monty is a presenter first and a gardener second, whereas the other two were time served gardeners, who could present.

    Hi
I totally agree. MD is a bandwagonner - I've seen him present ( as an "expert" ) food programmes, travel programmes and cookery programmes. He is a presenter first and foremost, as his breathy, actory style shows.
Expect "Decorate Your Home The Monty Way " soon!!

Sorry I don't agree. I actually find him a calming influence, but that probably says a lot about me!
I remember reading an article about him having some problems with severe depression in the past and now he is so passionate about his gardening and utilizing his kitchen garden in his cooking etc. I like to hear about people that have had problems and founds a way to sort themselves out.
Sorry, don't mean to go on, but I was just happy to hear that music again, it's so mellow and nice and I want to be gardening - now!!!

I don't agree. I think the programme was very good tonight. I mean they had alot in it for such a slow spring start. Made me feel not so bad that nothing is done yet do to our horrible weather up here.

Have to say I didn't notice the so called breathlessness. I am not a Monty fan but I did enjoy tonights show, apart from the veg.bit which I'm not into. Hope this is the beginning of a good series for this year. Please could Monty Don be a bit less breathless and frenetic in this programme. He always seems to be rushing about and gabbling his script. Oh dear there you go again. Monty Don is not a bandwagonner, if you read his book 'The Jewel Garden' you'd know that all his expertise was gained the hard way, i.e. he and his family being nearly destitute and his having to grow and cook to feed them, ditto take any work he could to get out of bankruptcy and pay off creditors, as any decent and honourable man would. Gardening and growing was real survival for him, not just a hobby. I admire that.

I quite agree,Heliotrope. Monty IS a real gardener. His column in The Observer magazine is always interesting. I don't quite see why his previous work as a presenter of various programmes precludes him from being described as a proper gardening presenter. I seem to remember Alan Titchmarsh doing magazine type programmes over many years. Monty not having any gardening qualifications is irrelevant really as he obviously knows his stuff. The reason Alan was so passionate about his work when he presented GW may have something to do with the fact that it was his garden! And anyone who reads Monty's books about his own beautiful garden can see that he has many years experience. Thank goodness he has got strong views about being organic and growing vegetables and eating things when they are in season. There are more than enough bland talentless people on the TV these days. Long may he reign!

I think you might have forgotten that AT, presented Pebble Mill at 1 for many years before doing the gardening thing.....

And having spent 4 days with Monty filming I'd like to say that he is very genuinely a very nice person trying to pass on his enthusiasm for gardening. He loves gardening first and formost, I'd love to do his job, but I don't think I could accept the critisism from the board members. Chris B is gushing and people seem to like that and positively encourage it.

Monty is really good at putting people at ease on the camera, you forget its there almost, and that is a wonderful achievement....

His mother died and left him some money, that is fairly normal, surely? So you think coming from a middle class background precludes you from knowing about gardening and being a 'bandwagon jumper'? What total tosh.

Nope, AT was very well known on the gardening circuit years before he did Pebble Mill at One. When he took the chair, there were a few raised eyebrows, but he seemed to take to it with surprising ease and from what I can remember, did a pretty good job.

As for MD - I've seen him make too many elementary mistakes in areas outside of his beloved veggies to take him seriously. I dislike the style, his evangelistic approach and erratic pace. Whenever his face pops up, I can't help but remember him doing the most stupid things with outsized lollipop sticks on the Richard 'n Judy show some years ago.

For heaven's sake, do we have to get so personal? There are FOUR presenters on GW and if you don't like one/all of them, tough! It's a gardening programme on the TV and it's been going for most of my gardening life. I have found it inspirational and informative and the presenters, whoever they are, are paid to do a job which, in the main, I think, they do well and professionally. Whatever is the point in attacking them? If they offend you so much go out and garden. Or get a life!

    Poor Monty,
I think he gets very passionate about his planting and love his enthusiasm for his compost heaps. As a fairly new gardener I find him less partonising than AT.
