I have only been watching GW and gardening two years, but I understand the programme has been going for over 20?
Has there ever been a female main presenter. I just wondered what others thought if 'when' Monty hangs up his braces the new person was a woman?
How in fact, can the producers continue to only pick a 'male' main presenters in light that so many gardeners and horticulturalists are now woman, and equal opps.
what do others think?
Good idea, I vote for Sarah , a good down to earth gardener. But seeing as Monty hasn't been going long, I can't see him hanging up his braces yet!

Don't get me going on that one again madmary.
Yes i think sarah is great, but not as gorgeous as monty.
Although i would like to make the point (especially for toadspawn) that i do watch gardening prorammes for information and ideas not just the presenter. The delicious Monty just makes it all the more interesting!!!

Same goes for me!
Christine Walkeden and Carol Klein - battle of the accents !!
Seriously though - Anne Swithinbank and Pippa Greenwood - either would put moribund monty to shame
Good thought auricula, or maybe Gay Search.

Perhaps you should change your nickname to "Downwithmonty" then we would know who it was and wouldn't bother to read it!!
Yes Gay Search is very good - I'd forgotten about her - very knowledgeable and doesn't talk down to viewers!!!!
Let's keep Our Monty-for a long while yet.Does it really matter if the Presenter is a Man or Woman? It is the programme and contents that are more important.
The priority should always be that the presenter is good at their job, and be knowledgable in horticulture. However, the programme has been going 30 years, and has only ever had Pippa Greenwood as a main presenter in all that time.
HOW can that be justified?
Dare I even throw another spoke in the works -ethnic minorities???

I couldn't agree more!
As for the present GW presenters, they all have their pro's and con's. I think it is a nice mixture, 2 men and 2 women, all with their own merits and something for everyone!

Totally agree, Anneliesje. Nicely put.

Battle of the compost materials!

Don't think Gay is quite the ticket for a main leader - how about someone completely different? I'm quite taken with the girl on "A Year at Kew" - the one in charge of the Palm House - I'm sure she'd like the chance of fame and fortune.
Anymore for any more?
Perhaps you should change your nickname to "Downwithmonty" then we would know who it was are able to take criticism as part of their ( very well paid ) lot.
However it is unpardonable to and wouldn't bother to read it!!</quote>
I was going to let this remark go, treating it with the contempt it deserves, but, as several other posters have been upset at personal attacks too, I will just reiterate that there is no need for rudeness just because people don't share your opinions. We can criticise the presenters styles as they are doing a job, in the public eye and doubtless take criticism as part of their (very well paid ) lot.
However, it is unpardonable to bully ordinary amateur enthusiasts by attacking or ridiculing their honest opinions.
Presenters in every field get criticised - it's part of the job. And their sex doesn't matter as long as they're the right person. Monty is - well - Monty. And no doubt he'll move on. Personally I'd have Chris Beardshaw. And two different co-presenters.
