On Friday Gw, he started off pototes in containers. The containers were already full of compost. I thought you started off with a little and then topped up?
Can someone please advise me which is right?
The way shown was totally wrong. The plants develop roots on which the tubers grow, on the stem above the old tuber. So the longer the stem, the more root and the more tubers. Being stupid as you cover the stem with more compost it carries on trying to reach the light, so plant on a few inches of compost and fill up the barrel as it grows.
Thank you
I have got them at the bottom of the pot and doing it the way you have said. I fail to understand why they make mistakes like this

What pot are you using.. I would like to have ago but get confussed as to the size of container to use. Need it be very deep?

The deeper the better for pots. I grew some potatoes in tyres a few years ago and had a good crop. I started with the base tyre which I lined with some membrane to stop the compost escaping then planted a few tubers. As they shooted up I added another tyre and more compost, ending up with 5 tyres - the large wide ones from Omega estate cars - which the gargae was happy to give me. I didn't weigh the crop but it was good and tasty. It may have been a fluke but we didn't get blight either though the following crop we grew in the ground did.
I've got a spare wheelie bin, that would do i suppose. Would i need drainage holes, thinking about it, i know the answer is going to be yes.

Hi - quite a few of us this year are starting out in smaller containers - builder buckets and the like - I suppose it depends on the size of crop you need / want - I am trying it this year to see if I can do it !!!!
Good luck - PA
I've grown potatoes in compost bags before and got a good crop. This year I've planted them in compost bags and rubble sacks, starting from the bottom! I find the bags are easier because if you can't lift them to tip out the crop, you can just cut them down the side. More eco friendly to wash and re-use them if you can though.
