Being home alone over Easter my treat to myself was going to be planting up the extension to my woodland border on Easter Monday.

The extension bit was dug last year and should have been planted in the Autumn but as we are on heavy clay it seemed a better idea to wait until Spring.

Things got off to a good start on Saturday when I weeded over the bed all the while thinking about the path I was putting in between the existing border and the new bit. This was intended to be a secret, plants-tickling-the-ankles path leading to a bench and would just be made from chipped bark to blend with the mulch on the beds.

Having watched MD on Gardeners' World on Friday I then decided maybe I ought to do a better job so I started digging out the path. The soil is very stony so then I thought I could use the stones as a base for the path! This would mean less stuff to move but would still leave me with a load of soil.

Then I thought I would put this down the side of the garden where the lawn meets a Devon bank. As I intend to plant along this edge at some point it seemed like a good idea to get the weeds out before dumping a load of soil on them.

Now I have a partly dug path, a potential new border and the plants are still waiting to go in.
    smiley - doh

More of the same although the beer idea sounds good.

Have just spent another two hours or so on the potential new border which has yielded lots of stones for my path and enough large rocks to make a bit of a retaining wall where the border dips in level.

The idea of digging a hole to put excess soil in actually works in this garden!smiley - biggrin

    Found two tiny lizards too!
