I was shocked at the method of cliping of the hens wings on tonights gardening program bbc 2. My hubbie says you should only shave the growth of feather from the quill and do not every cut the quill across.
This is because at time of moult the new quills are full of blood and nerve endings and would be very painful if cut for the bird.
The safe method is to shave the feather growth from the quills of the primary feathers of each wing thus preventing lift for flight.
...and was it the time of moult? No.
I agree, I keep chickens and it was rather excessive, I cringed as I watched it. You dont need to take much off at all, just enough to affect their flight, an inch would suffice.
Whether it was moult or not the method is totally out dated and barbaric and not necessary these days. Novices watching would not know when the moult is occuring and watching this prgramme assume this is the correct method. Even the presenter turned away when it was done and the chicken did flinch.
thank you for your support.
