Wow, I haven't watched Gardener's World for ages, but what's happened to it? It looks like some dumbed down reality tv rubbish. What happened to the presenters? I remember Geoffrey Smith who actually knew something about gardening. What a pity they ruined such a great show with their sad attempt to be trendy.
Funny, but I have been wondering about whether there might be another Geoffrey Smith out there. So practical and knowledgeable, down to earth. If it wasn't for a little relief from Carole all this about plaaarnts and plaaarting realy irritate me and really I don't mind regional accents at all.
Logi,
You clearly do have a big hang-up about regional accents!
Joe
Not really Joe, in fact I think they are a great part of British culture. It pretty interesting to be able to identify roughly where people come from as soon as you hear them talk. But there are some people who inspire me to switch off as soon as I hear them speak. It will take a lot more than plaaarnts and plaaarnting!
Incidentally are you THE Joe?
No, I haven't made it into the big time!
I'm not quite sure whose accent you're objecting to. Having been brought up in the west country I have fairly long a's and a tendency towards rhotic speech, but I haven't noticed people recoiling in horror.
Certainly not to those from the southwest. I worked on a Wiltshire farm over a number of student holidays, lovely people, lovely accent, my Yorkshire tones took plenty of teasing I can tell you.
Hope the summer is treating you well!

You're still being a little coy about names, Logo!
The summer seems to be full of hedges at the moment
Joe
How about Joe, Tobes and Alys, but there are lots of other unflattering comments by others about them on other threads. The accents do not bother me when the technical content of GW is absorbing enough but when it is not, plaaarnts and plaaarnting just distract me I'm afraid.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to be distracted by other examples of presenters peculiarities. Nowadays for example "in the future" doesn't exist anymore, it has to be "going forward", another is that things are no longer "affected" they are "impacted" and the last one for this evening, our Olympics are not going to be "provided" to us they are going to be "delivered". One day I am going to ring up the ODA and ask them to deliver me an Olympics please with a side salad!
here endeth the semantic whinge.
Goodnight all

You should take this to the Word of Mouth board, Logo; you'd get a right old battering there!
Joe

´óÏó´«Ã½ Word of Mouth - it's on the menu, me old dear.
Joe
Thanks Bob,
I actually googled 'word of mouth' and found a "Guardian" lifestyle site, quite interesting. I'll now look for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ site but is it linked to the Radio 4 prog of the same name or something different?
Sorry for the hassle;
