Hi all on Friday last I watched Gardeners World the 1st. time for an age. I saw the kitchen garden at Knighthayes Court that was shown. I visited it and have arrived back at home feeling very jealous. No white fly , no black fly, no badgers, every inch of the ground fully cultivated. How wonderful. The wall around the gardens must keep all these flies etc. out. Our plots are covered in these flies etc and more so I now know what incect free looks like. If you have a chance of visiting go asap. For once thankyou ´óÏó´«Ã½ for showing this garden.smiley - smiley

One thing puzzled me about that kitchen garden. The lady who showed Carole around the garden said that the garden was very overgrown with weeds before it was restored. She also said that the garden was completely organic. She didn't say how they got rid of the weeds. I would very much like to know the organic method they used.

Hi Cycling gardener, more than likely. There were a number of volunteers working there when we visited on Monday. The chef from the restaurant was picking crops that they were going to cook. I don't know if the whole garden was rotovated initially because it would only have been chopping up the roots of all those weeds when it was firstly brought back into use. It would certainly have increased the volume of weeds I should think. Still worth a visit.

My fathers garden was a walled garden and it was virtually insect free.
As to weeds when the dig for victory began during the war the men took over arable land and then it was double digging and every spade full of the top soil went through a big riddle. Us young lads had the job of removing the weeds from the top side of the riddle and moving it along as the men worked.
We piled up the weeds and burnt them, that was the fun bit and the ash went onto the compost.
Hard work and diligence is the only way so the Knighthayes Court people should be congratulated.
    Frank.
