It was really very good of them to chip in with their unanswerable posting. Since this would seem to break new ground, I assume that they are aware of the consistent criticisms relating to the irregularity of GW this year. If this is indeed the case, I find it strange that there was no attempt to explain the thinking behind the withdrawals in recent weeks. Indeed, they set out to reassure us that (with yet another sport-related exception) it was plain sailing till the end of the series, yet what most of us would like to hear, is the reasons for the recent cancellations. Can they simply not function unless they have their 'own' slot of friday nights? Whilst I'm sure it was all very well intended, it really could be interpreted as a fob-off to a numpty audience. Why couldn't they just have told us why the decision was reached to cancel GW simply because sporting events intruded on our historical timeslot. The Beechgrove Garden dodges around all these interruptions without resorting to wholesale cancellations.
Assuming that an entire team didn't compose the little message for the Board, it would be nice to know what level of management we are dealing with.

I am reassured firstly that someone appears to have taken notice that GW viewers are getting hacked off with the numerous programme cancellations of late (due to sport) and secondly that we have confirmation that service is to be resumed as normal pretty much until November. As sporting fixtures have taken precedence over GW Ken, much as it annoys me, no explanation is needed in my case although I'm aware that by adopting this laissez-faire attitude I'm declaring myself a 'numpty'.
I expect the production team have little or no influence over the schedules and merely conform to decisions made by a higher 'authority' but agree that it must surely be possible to move GW to another time when there is a clash of interests.
Oh Dear - that was me that has been removed and given a nasty warning.
Most unfair I think
Oops - hope you weren't rocking the boat Nooj

Are you not even curious as to why it couldn't have been shown on another day, or at another time, or on another channel? Of all the hundreds of programmes that could have been withdrawn (´óÏó´«Ã½3 in it's entirety), why should GW have to be sacrificed? The simple explanation is that it suited all involved to have a week or two off, to get on with other lucrative projects. Why do you think the 'Production Team' (they clearly speak as one) took the trouble to post on the Board, if there wasn't a feeling of guilt involved. If they cared one whit for their audience, they'd have produced a programme.
I'm declaring myself a 'numpty'Â
No, no - we can't say that - but if all viewers were as relaxed as you about the scheduling, I shudder to think what would befall us. Indeed, it can't be very flattering to the programme makers to be supported with such indifference. Ken.
I went home on Friday evening and immediately looked at the scheduling for the evening .... no GW. Went to my 'planner' to see if it had been moved to Saturday, like the last time. Nope, niet, nada .......
I've just now seen the message from the production team and at least that provided a good laugh. It will apparently include tips on getting more butterflies and moths into the garden ..... when we're nearly into autumn
Ken,
I read the message went straight to reply and "agh" no reply button.
Can we do that? could Nooj have put her message on and cancelled the get this off air button?
As usual one law for the elite and another for the PBI.
It comes down to numbers Ken and owing the the dodgy content of the GW programmes not enough of us are watching therefore we can be shelved ad hock who cares.
Strictly come dancing starts up soon with the liveliest board you will ever see, they would not dare to remove that programme for something else, the lines would be blocked for days.
It is in our hands, get a few more of the GW watchers to write and complain or as with SCD let the newspapers in on it, that gets them up off their bottoms sorting things fast.
We are too quiet Ken as is the way of gardeners, we should be more vocal.
Frank.
I agree with Frank and Ken ( and that's not something to be taken lightly )
It's "death by a thousand cuts" and the outcry on the ( sometimes scarily intense) SCD boards would be legendary if that was treated in a similar fashion. You cannot pick up and put down gardening. Most of ´óÏó´«Ã½3 is rubbish, repeats or repeated rubbish so I'm sure GW would be like a beacon shining through the gloom....whenever it was broadcast.
No Frank - my message was no 2 on this thread, which suggested we weren't being able to comment freely.
No idea why I got a threat - which is very much what it felt like
Still a bit shocked - never mind

Well I had to change my username because the gods thought it was not suitable.........Very odd.
And yes got to agree with Ken and also whats been said about ´óÏó´«Ã½ 3.Still it will be nice to see GW back, hope we get an update on that gaint pumpkin seed Toby planted.
Nooj
Its not called the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corruption for nothing. Pity they don't remember who pays their wages......
I was going to post a thread on Friday night about tiddlywinks again but they beat me to it. The original thread and its closure was quite interesting because its the first time I had seen a posting by the production team. Obviously they did not want to get into any discussion about it.

I think you are being harsh. I'm sure they do care for their audience, they need us to stay in production. Being moved aside for sport isn't new. Its been happening for years and not just to GW but please don't mistake my acceptance for indifference. Its just that in the scheme of life there are more important problems that I direct my energy towards. I've watched GW for more years than I care to remember even throughout the dire series last year when, in my opinion, it achieved an all time low and I critised it on here accordingly - hardly indifference. I seem to remember you withdrew from the programme entirely. Anyway, lets hope Toby etc made the most of the break and took time to enjoy their families.

Pheraps if the presenters wore sports gear while presenting the show it would solve the problem.............
Nooj, I meant to respond earlier. I can recall your short Message 2, and for the life of me couldn't think why it had been withdrawn. I'm all for controlling content, but feel we're getting just a little bit too sensitive. In all the years I've been contributing, I've never yet pushed the 'alarm', and have been furious when I've had it done to me. It's the not knowing who or why that irks - but it soon passes.

Pathetic!
Well just to change the mood here, I was disappointed that I couldn't reply to the production thread, because I wanted to say 'Great, thanks.' In previous years the programme has been off air for most of August. At least this year there has been only one missing week.
I personally subscribe, where possible, to the 'catch them doing something right' philosophy. And here they were, doing something right, but we had no opportunity to encourage it further!

Just a couple of points, Trillium. The fact that there has only been one missing week in August has nothing at all to do with a caring GW Production Team, but has everything to do with what sporting events are 'clashing' with our historical friday timeslot. Had there been any other sporting events on, then GW would have been cancelled - that really is the lesson of history. Just look at the interlude in the previous month. There has been no explanation at all as to the reasons why they felt it necessary to ditch GW, when we all know that many other programme are accommodated with ease.
The other point I'd like to stress (yet again), is that the 'GW Production Team' did not say anything at all. It was simply a limp impersonal statement from a large organisation, with no one person 'signing' it. There were no apologies, no explanations - just the assumption that we'd all welcome them back with open arms. What I'd have appreciated, was some indication of exactly why they felt it necessary to ditch GW on SEVERAL occasions this summer. I'm also mindful that there is one further friday clash for Ryder Cup later in the season - and guess what? Put it another way - if there was top quality sport on offer EVERY friday night, would that mean that it would not be possible to have a gardening programme at all? That appears to be the current situation.
I too hate the way GW comes off air so regularly but why assume that the presenters and producers like it any more than we do, given that it so damages the continuity of the programme? Gardening is all about follow-on and leaving great gaps in the schedule is rather deflating and means you aren't expecting any follow-up. Anyway my point is I was under the impression that it was schedulers - whoever they are - that take this level of decision not producers or even exec producers.

RC,
Yeah, it's so witty to mock the ´óÏó´«Ã½ as being some kind of Stalinist Big Brother institution that stifles freedom of speech and choice but have you noticed the alternative?
You know people like you and Ken who do nothing but complain - sorry, provide constructive balanced criticism in a cool, objective, rational manner - will end up getting what you wish for and then you'll have the rest of your lives to spend flicking through hundreds of 'pro-choice' channels on another well known provider, which will no doubt include repeats of ´óÏó´«Ã½ gardening programmes, and will probably be billed as an hour long programme although in fact will only be 10 minutes of actual programme after you've deducted adverts, 'previously ons', after the break intros and next week preview slots.
And no, I don't work for the ´óÏó´«Ã½, but like many other tax paying members of the public, I can still see the virtue of having a national television service that is in no way obliged to bombard us with constant advertising and yet still produces what I consider world class programming.

Hi all
Though I find it hard to think of myself as "management", in reply to Ken's posting, I am Gill the Executive Producer. The reason for the umbrella title of GW Production team is so that from time to time other team members can post information that people might find useful.
I do understand the frustration around the cancellations of GW. The decisions about scheduling programmes rest with the channel who have to prioritise competing needs week by week. As for the production team, we are here throughout the growing year, ready to make programmes. Don't know if you noticed but when we off during July we still posted the Jobs for the Weekend segment on the website and of course we are still shooting insert films while we are off air. If you feel strongly about the cancellations, you can write to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two schedulers.
Apologies for the unanswerable posting. I didn't know it had been formulated that way but as I read the message boards regularly, I hope to stay in touch by jumping in occasionally when I can add clarification. Hope this helps.
