Hello all
We've got some exciting new things happening on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Gardening website...
First of all I should probably introduce myself! I'm Jen and I'm a new host here on the gardening message boards. Don't worry, Saima and Daisy will still be very much around.
I will be mainly concentrating on the Garden Clinic topic.
The reason for this is we have just launched the new ´óÏó´«Ã½ Gardening Blog (link below). The blog will be going to great lengths to satisfy your appetite for horticultural inspiration, problem-solving and sheer delight in plants and gardens.
From now on I'll be scouting the Garden Clinic topic for recurring themes and intriguing problems and putting them to our guests and regular writers. And on some occasions asking you to post your questions on specific topics.
The other exciting thing is that this message board is going to get a new look in the not too distant future. We don't have an exact date yet but I'll keep you posted.
So without further ado, head over to the new Gardening Blog and let us know your thoughts. I will do my best to answer as many questions as possible.
Looking forward to getting to know you
Jen

Is the 'new look' going to be the same as the Food Board?
All we wanted was a decent search engine!

Please dont make us have to change our log in again. It was very tiresome last time.

Hello Jennifer,
I've just had a look at the blog and, on seeing Jim McColl, I thought it was my birthday! At long last, ...... it was like he popped down here for a visit.
On then on scrolling down, there was Bob Flowerdew! So birthday and Christmas in one! An interesting read and I'm really looking forward to reading more from both of them.

Hi Blue and Jane and GiantTrowel (love the nickname btw!)
So glad you're pleased to see Jim and Bob, Blue. I'm chuffed to bits they're involved. And just wait til you read Alys' first post in just over a week - she's a fantastic writer. We're lucky to have her on board too.
Regarding the new look board....I'm sorry to say there won't be a search function I know, it's top of my list too.
The board is simply going to get a new 'skin'. There will be no new functionality particularly and there will be no need to re-register and change login names.
It will become centre aligned and have a fresher design but other than that it will remain unchanged for now.

There will be no new functionality Â
Sorry to be dumb but what does that mean please?

Hi joanybird
It means that the message board is simply getting a new look. The way it works will be more or less the same (the only reason it will be different is because it will look a little different).
Eg the whole page will be centre aligned and the buttons will look different (but have the same lables) and so on.
Hope that helps.
Jen

Clear as mud,
Thanks

basically they will be changing the colours, the format , and what buttons look like for those who can not or understand technospeak.
Link to this forum: Hello from a new host and other exciting things!
To be honest it does need a new 'skin'
And some buttons for quotes, HTML links etc.

I understood that Vassara . It was just the use of the word 'functionality'.
I guess that means it will look different but work in the same way as it does now. Which begs the question 'why bother'

Over the years the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has changed the message board thinking that improvements were being made.
We lost the ability to link threads, we lost the ability to 'chat', the stupid 3 minute rule was introduced etc. etc.
The phrase ' if it ain't broke don't repair it' comes to mind.
I guess these "improvements" are being made to keep someone in a job.

Come on give her a chance its the first day and hopefully they might actually improve the functionality of this board. The three minute rule should go if you have over a # number of posts. By that time you should be trusted a bit.
I am hopeful that it will improve or at least sit in the middle of the screen..............

Welcome Jennifer.
I note that you mention the possible closing of this TV and Radio board in a throw away line on your thread on the Inspiration board. I have replied there but I must also insist here that this board provides a means of giving valuable feedback to any producers, editors, presenters and camera personnel willing to listen and thus improve programme content, format and viewing or listening figures.
I sincerely hope it will not be closed down. Blogs are fine in their way but do not have the same immediacy for the individuals or the greater community formed by we "consumers" of gardening broadcasts.

I fear you've just condemned the Board to death.

Perspicacious as ever, Ken!
Jenniofer, this board is usually heaving with activity. Don't let its current state of hibernation fool you. It gets very busy and also heated, admittedly, but enough of a cross-section come on here to provide insight to anyone willing to use it.
Link to this forum: Hello from a new host and other exciting things!
I haven't noticed it "heaving" for months :/
In fact I wondered if the lack of activity on here would herald this board's closure...........seem I wasn't far wrong!!

Hi RowanCottage
Thank you for your kind comments!!
The re-design does mean the website will be centre aligned like the rest of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ webpages.
The message boards are a little behind in getting this treatment and I hope you will all find it an improvement.
J.

Apart from Chelsea coverage in May there hasn't been anything to "heave" about for months.
Given Wimbledon, football, proms, snooker and now the Commonwealth games, we haven't even had our once weekly dose of GW and there haven't been any other gardening programmes on mainstream terrestrial TV.
What GW we have is regularly commented on with plenty of discussion on perceieved improvements, failings and requests for better info, clarity and camera work. We say what we like, what we'd like more of and what can go.
Many production companies, service providers and manufacturers spend fortunes on market research to assess the image and success of their product. This board gives it to GW and other gardening programmes for free and is a great resource.

Hi Lowena, janerowena and Obelixx
As Lowena says, the TV & Radio topic hasn't been as popular as the others which is why I am considering closing it.
But it's not a done deal. If you feel this is the best place to talk about the gardening output from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ then I am happy to be convinced.
Is there anything we can do that would encourage you to use this topic more?
J.

Hello Jennifer,
You're asking for quantity - and when people feel very strongly about a particular broadcast, then quantity is what you get.
But mostly what you get is good quality feedback from people who've been watching the programme for years, who love it to bits (even when it's terrible). We know it inside out and can read the changes in mood and style over time. Mostly we are not blinkered reactionaries, but provide honest perspectives about our feelings about the development of this long-lived, and now the only, regular gardening programme on the ´óÏó´«Ã½.
Many of the very specific comments made on these boards appear to have been acted on, though of course the same comments may have been made through other vehicles. Think of us as a sort of expert viewers panel, perhaps?
In truth I don't think I can stand in defence of a separate board for programmes, but there must be a clear place here for programme feedback.

Hello Jennifer.
This TV and Radio board has a clear identity and thus a clear mission. It may be the least used but that does not make it less valuable, simply more precise.
It is the obvious place to come to comment on programme content, to make suggestions for future content and programmes and to have, we hope, a direct link to programme makers who benefit equally from direct and instant feedback.
If you lose this board people will simply transfer their comments to posts on teh other boards. We do feel passionately about GW in all its forms since Percy Thrower. We do have professional gardeners and designers as well as a wide range of amateurs with, collectively, a vast range of experience and specialities in all things gardening. Why throw away such a valuable asset?
As for the other boards, their missions are less clear. For example, there is often confusion between what should and cold be posted on the Clinic and Allotment boards. NOt all of us have an allotment but many of us grow fruit and veg so maybe "Edible gardening" would be more appropriate than "Allotment".
As for the Inspiration (Design) board, this also seems to have a fuzzy mission which can lead to more cross over of content. This board is potentially a great resource for sharing photos and ideas for planting schemes, structures, methods and ornaments gleaned from succeses and failures our own gardens as well as visits to famous gardens around the world as well as Yellow Book gardens in the UK and their European equivalents.
That leaves the question of where to put wildlife gardening, now that gardens are increasingly providing a refuge for so many plants and creatures which have been driven out of their natural habitats by building or farming practices.

Is there anything we can do that would encourage you to use this topic more?Â
The starting point for an 'on TV' thread, is to give us a quality programme to discuss. Repetition is the curse of the board, as contributers can hardly keep saying the same old things week in, week out. Even when there are good things to compliment, there is a reluctance to say so, lest the programme reverts to type the following week. The programme dipped downhill dramatically when Toby took over, and despite a vigorous defense of the new format by ALL concerned, common sense prevailed, and it reverted to something again watchable this year. To my knowledge, no-one admitted that any mistake had been made, and now we're left with exactly the same presenters who made such a 'horses dock' of the programme in the first place. Clearly these people have no shame. Now, the big initiative is to start a 'blog' which will feature our Alys of all people. One of the participants in the worst-ever series of GW once again gets star billing in a new venture. There is simply no penalties for failure in TV land, and we get yet further promotion of someone tainted by the GW disaster.
'The Beechgrove Garden' has been a splendid example of what can be achieved with an excellent group of presenters concentrating on all the right areas. This programme leaves me with the warm glow that GW used to provide. There is a harmony in this programme that GW just doesn't have, and the reason for this is undoubtedly the fact that all the GW presenters have their fingers in so many other pies. Gardeners' World is just another duty for them, and not the be-all and end-all - and boy, does this shine through. These people spread themselves too far, and may not even have the time to analyse the problems. Like most people who regularly contribute to the board, I do now at least watch the programme, but long to once again get the warm glow of yesteryear. Give us back that feeling, and the board will again hum with activity.

Hello Jennifer
Trillium has put it much more eloquently than I and I totally agree with this post.
I have not been using these boards for as long or as much as some other posters but I would be very disappointed if this particular thread was removed.
It the first one I click onto to see what everyone thought of the gardening programmes and it can be very amusing and informative.
I love Gardeners World – warts and all and since finding these boards feel part of a family and feel I have a right to discuss it contents.
Why would you close down the only thread that lets people praise, discuss, criticise and give very good feedback to programme makers, is a case of not being able to take on board what is said.
And do you not think if there where more Gardening programme on the ´óÏó´«Ã½, we would have more to discuss?

Hello again Jennifer,
I don't want to be negative, but from what you write about future changes to the gardening boards, they sound like the changes the wonderful (now sadly deceased) food boards got
There used to be an interesting, generous and vibrant bunch of posters there before the changes. Now it's deserted.
Please don't do that to these boards too!

bbc having been giving the boards 'the treatment' for years.
if there was a general gardening chat board then the tv stuff could go in there?

its interesting this reverse decimation [leaving one in ten] of the boards over the years.
given its the one area the 'commercial' sector cannot do the bbc feels it has no need to do it either.
First thing thommo as DG did was slash the boards to bits.
boards can fulfil all the functions of the charter ie to inform educate and entertain as 'nation speaks unto nation'. but no. close them all down is the motto.
after all the unions want 10% of the licence fee to go on the ponzi pension scheme.

Hello all
Just to reassure you, the gardening mesage boards aren't closing and having listened to what you've said about the TV and Radio topic, I'm happy that it should live on.
What we will try and do is get more responses from the GW (or any other) production team when you ask specific questions.
