Sarkovy's safe but for president of the RHSS? Grow to Show - isn't it all a bit out-of-date? What happened to taste? Once upon a time there were vegetables that had to battle with the vagiaries of the soil and the weather. Damaging a celery stalk with a fingernail was the least of their worries. Do you think botox is secretly injected if a wrinkle threatens? Isn't all a bit Jackie Stallone?

grow to show does keep certain skills alive and develops innovation but other than that it is a bit souless. We all know the tomatoes that look perfect but taste of nothing.

materialist gardening looks for the biggest and those qualities that appeal to the eye only.

Le Manoir is part of a philosophy of living. I helped build the gardens there and Raymond would come out, shaking hands and treat us like we an essential part of the vision.

Growing for the plate involves a different mindset. Every cook and gardener needs an understanding of chemistry. An understanding of what changes flavour. What changes nourishment. Then to place that understanding in service to man in what one might call culture.

At the time of creation [late 80's early 90's] Le Manoir was a radical force in both cooking and gardening in the uk because it presented and probably still does present a unified vision of living [i have no idea what is going on there now].

TV however is all about segmentation these days where unified vision has no place. When once the family sat watching the same shows as family sat around the same dinner table now it wouldn't surprise me if mainly everyone eats separately watching their own tvs in their own rooms. Multiply that across a range of minorities who have their own channels and satellite and no one talks to anyone because they have little or nothing in common. Where is the unified space on tv or the uk? but that is a bigger topic.

I to bad that the factors in weather, soil and watering regimes not well understood when come to affecting taste.
