She was my favourite gardeners world presenter she bought the unusual to the programme. Like telling us about different types of veg not the bog standard carrot, potato, cabbage etc. I got to learn about oriental plants, it was great I love to try to grow something you can't get in the shops. Another thing she would make things for the garden using things you may already have instead of buying all new things. I really want her to stay on, or at least be given her own programme because I really enjoyed watching her show The edible garden, I learnt so much and was really inspired to try out the ideas in my own garden. And lastly I have to bring this up I am 22 and it was wonderful watching someone who brings gardening to your age group I have nothing against the gardeners world presenters I like Monty and I did like Toby, but I did have a special spot for Alys as she made gardening cool.
This is why I think Alys should have stayed. Not because I prefer her to Rachel in any personal, or vague way, but specifically because of the younger audience she appeals to. Alys is of the new media generation and that matters. Will Rachel, Joe, Monty or Carol twitter entertainingly on the subject of Pak Choi, sourdough and chocolate cake? I suspect not. Many of you may be sniffy about such things but Alys has 1,300 followers who read her every word. She hits the zeitgeist.
No one could accuse the GW selectors of ageism re the new team - except in reverse perhaps. Joe will now be the youngest of the new team at the tender age of 45. Of course, 45 is young, unless you are 25 that is, in which case it is ancient.
I quite agree with both of the previous messages. I am not young but have only recently become besotted with gardening and have used many of the ideas Alys has come up with and had great success with most of them.
There are plenty of young would be gardeners around nowadays and it is very important to keep their interest.
I hope Alys will be able to have another programme of her own in the near future as she will be sorely missed on Gardeners World.

Good morning,
Perhaps then that was why I found Alys a bit irritating, I am one of the older G W. viewers. I hadnt considered the younger viewer . among us. ..Sorry.! Mo.

Maybe we could have TWO programmes then - one for the more experienced gardener and one for the newbies. Sorted!
I am very pleased that she has gone.
That may also be the reason why I found Alys a real pain in the rear. Her presentational skills are very close to the bottom end of an ability scale. Luckily I was able to fast forward all her contributions. Her collection of boxes, tins etc was an eyesore and a couple of potatoes in a bucket is hardly going to produce enough potatoes for a good meal.

I was thinking along those lines as well.
If we consider that most households have a garden of some sort, either acres or a window box/planter, then we also have to consider that there are people out there who have been gardening for donkeys years and those brand new to it. How many youngsters do we know who have just got their own home and havn't a clue what to do with that weedy patch out the back?
It's very difficult to have a programme that will suit everyone, so 'Gardening for Beginners' would be a good idea. Carol would be the ideal presenter as she stirs up enthusiasm and explains everything so clearly. Even us old hands may learn something (as I did in her recent superb show). The very experienced gardeners do not have to watch it. They would probably only criticise the methods etc. Then there could be another programme with the more in depth stuff.
It amazes me that GW gets so many moans and groans, when the presenters are trying so hard to include something for everyone. I watch it religiously, and even if it covers things I already know, I just enjoy the different comments, ideas, new varieties of plants etc.
the bucket in question produced enough potatoes (red duke of york) for six meals for two people. I call that impressive!
I also agree with you, I am very sad that there’s no place for Alys on GW
I liked her quirky style, I thought she was a breath of fresh air and although I’m getting on a bit compare to you, "lucasfred" I thought she was cool too.
I loved her programme The Edible Garden, which helped me in growing a few vegs and I bought her book. I supposed we can’t be sure that she wanted to renew her contract, perhaps she has other projects but I’ll miss Alys and I would have thought the powers that be would realise that they need to appeal to young gardeners with the first homes, after all they are the audience of the future.

I thought Alys own show was excellent. It was very positive. Showing the whole process of seed to plate was very helpful.
There needs to be a mix of ages on GW to appeal to as many as possible.
There also needs to be females on the show to prevent it getting 'blokey'.
I really hope Alys gets her own series, in the wake of what has happened.
It is very sad that this young and well qualified woman is being axed from the show. We need to get more young people involved in gardening and Alys is a good example that gardening is not just for the over 40's and gardening is cool! I love GW and have enjoyed the programme in all its forms, however I do like to see younger presenters getting a chance to do their thing.
I so agree. Bring back Alice! She was a breath of fresh air.
Sorry Alys, I spelt your name the conventional way and you sure are not conventional!
I am not, unfortunately, a 'younger' viewer! However, I love Alys! She is indeed a breath of fresh air. I love her wonderful, sunny outlook on life in the garden. She is 'human' and doesn't always get things right - just like 'your average gardener'.
It makes me sad that Alys will not be appearing on GW in the near future but do hope she makes more programmes!
PLEASE do as the thread advises .... Bring back Alys Fowler!

I heart Alys and watched her programme the Edible Gradener many times over on my Sky+ box. I think she is just charming!
I'm 29 and her enthusiasm encourages me that I am not the only young Graden geek out there. I think she's just fab and I'm quite sad that she will be on Gardeners World no longer.
If we can't bring her back, could we at least give her something hip and cool and still gardeningly related to do?
I'm glad she's gone. I don't have to fast-forward through her parts of the show anymore.
I'm not exactly old and she's just another part of the "Blue Peter" presenting style that I'm glad to see the back of.

How old is 'not exactly old', Ben? And why has age got anything to do with it? Intolerance can come at any age.
Joe
I wholeheartedly agree - I can't think why the ´óÏó´«Ã½ would drop Alys from GW - she is so interesting bringing in permculture ideas etc.
I'm thrilled that Monty Don is coming back....but don't lets loose Alys - unless she gets another series of her own!!

She has a good column in the Guardian weekend magazine, Carole. Yes, I would like to see her back in some way and, to refer to a previous post, I'm not exactly young!
Not a fan of either Alice nor Montague - so .... very mixed reactions
I only mention age as the original poster brought it into the argument.
A patronising presenting style is enough to make any adult stop watching.
I agree loved Alys. what with Toby getting the chop as well is this ageist in reverse? I'm an unexperienced gardener and I thought their presenting was very relevant to me. They should do a show together! Gardeners World will not be the came
I too love Alys and I'm upset that she won't be on Gardeners' World. I love The Edible Garden - maybe we could have The Edible Garden 2? I'd like to see how the chickens are getting on and I'm sure there are more vegetables to cover.
Hi
Don't forget Alys contributes to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ gardening blog so you can find out what she's up to there.
Here's here latest post:
Jen
I'm a bit worried about Alys after reading her blog. I hope the person she is visiting in hospital is going to be OK.
Just read her blog.
Alys - can I send you all the best wishes possible?
It's a very difficult time for you, but I'm sure we all wish you strength and comfort
x
yes to the edible garden 2 and an update on the chickens the program was enchanting and helpful to

In as brief as possible answer to the title of this thread.... NO!
I went to a presentation/talk that Alys gave in Sussex last year & she was absolutely fabulous. Charming, friendly, witty & very very knowledgeable. ´óÏó´«Ã½ has got it wrong I'm afraid, she's a star.
No more Alys Fowler.....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
