Would not worry to much moist rich soil seems to be there only thing they need in my garden. I grow in sun and shade . Although I must say they do flower better in light shade. And if your lilly flowers fine where iit is not to worry.

I thought he'd have mentioned the dreaded RLB (red lily beetle) which absolutely love Lilium regale!

In my experience regal lilies grow in most well-drained soils, except very alkaline and prefers a site in full sun or partial shade.

I have a neat way to catch these little monsters Thank goddness they stand out being nice and Red. But if you get near them they drop to the soil where they belly up and blend very well
So I hold a cup underneath the bud or leaf where they are. It is part filled with water to which I add washing up liquid and foam it up. When the roll off the plant they land in the foam which traps them. Then thats the end for them, it has been so successful that each year they have reduced. Last year no damage and only two bugs.

I must look again on the iplayer, but I doubt that is what he said. Monty is a grit gardener, so most likely he said gritty compost rather than ericaceous. There are some lilles that require acid soil like L. nepalense and the very tall Cardiocrinum giganteum.
In actual fact Lilium regale came from a rocky valley, as Ernest Wilson was leaving the area there was a rock fall which hit one of his legs. His Chinese staff strapped him to a mule and got him to a missionary outpost. Wilson then had to do some tough talking to get out of having the leg amputated for fear of gangrene!
